Latin American Culture. By: Maria Lenhard. Who are Latin Americans?. The origin of where Latin Americans live are in the countries of Latin America or the Iberian Penisula. They are called Latin Americans because they have formed a ethnic group in the United States.

Who are Latin Americans? • The origin of where Latin Americans live are in the countries of Latin America or the Iberian Penisula. • They are called Latin Americans because they have formed a ethnic group in the United States. • They are also called Hispanics and Latinos. The term Latino is accepted by the Americans because it shows where they have originated from. • They mainly speak Spanish • 63% of Hispanics are living in the U.S. • They make up 11% of the United States population • 90% of Latinos are Roman Catholic

  3. How does Latin Americans interact with each other and how does this influence the US? • Hispanics mostly speak Spanish. The Latin Americans brought over Spanish and now we can see many people speaking Spanish in the U.S. Americans have to take a Spanish class in high school if they want to go to college. Americans need to do this so they can communicate with Hispanics better. • Hispanics brought over family values. Latin Americans respect their family and you could see that they lived close together with their extended families in Latin America. • Latin Americans help other families if they are going through financial problems or other issues. • The fathers role is the head of the house and the mother’s role is being responsible for the house. • There are many greetings that Latin Americans have that influenced Americans. For example one gives a firm handshake when greeting each other or saying goodbye to each other.

  4. Latin American Food Influences the US • Hispanic Heritage Month is on September 15th until October 5th. Americans recognize this month and celebrate by having festivals showing their appreciation for the great influence of the hispanics.These festival provides many dishes that were originated from Hispanics. Some foods that you will see at these festivals are Churros, Pupusas, Curtido, Tamales, Yucca Frita, tacos, salsa, tortilla chips and Mexican hot chocolate. • Because Latin American brought over their foods, America has opened a food chain restaurant called Chi-Chis. They are famous for their fried ice cream and birthday parties. • Americans have Americanized traditional Latin American foods just like what we did with Chinese food. Latinos influenced to make new flavors in food like dulce de leche ice cream (Carmel ice cream) and jalapeno potato-chips. You can find many grocery stores that provide lots of Latin American food like hot sauce, cheese made in Mexico, tropical fruits, and corn husks for wrapping tamales. Latin American’s influence on the US with Music • Latin Americans play their music at social gatherings and just have a good time. • Some genres of music they introduced to America are Salsa, Mariachi, and Latin Pop. • After Latino’s eat their dinner and have a conversation at the dinner table called the “sobre-mesa”, they sing and dance to their Latin music. The music is played depending on the mood and atmosphere. • Their music heritage comes from 3 different sources: the indigenous from their natives, the European music from settlers, are the African music from the slaves. • Each country in Latin America has different genres of music like for Puerto Rico they have a rhythm for their music called Bomba. Bomba has different styles like lero, yuba, cunya, babu, and belen. • Some instruments that were introduced to the US was a Spanish guitar from Spaniards. From Latinos we were also introduced to native Bombas drums originally from Africans. Mariachi

  6. Influences from Latin Artists • Latino Artists have inspired other artists with their artwork. Some artists that were known for their famous work and their inspiration toward other artists are: • Francisco Zurbaran (1598-1664)- He was known for his religious paintings and the use of contrasting light and dark. • Diego Velazquez (1559-1660)- He is known for his realistic and individualistic art. He influenced artists like Edoudard Manet, Francis Bacon, Salvador Dali, and Pablo Picasso. • Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)- He was the most influential Spanish artist in history. He went through two styles of artwork called the Blue period (painting in blue or green) and the Rose period (where he used cheerful colors like orange.) • Bartolome Esteban Murillo (1611-1682)- He was a Spanish painter who was known for his religious art and portraits of women and children. He was influenced by Spanish artists like Velazquez and Zurbaran. • Francisco De Goya- He was a Spanish painter and printmaker. He is famous for Spanish royalty and social commentary in his artwork. A famous painting he did was called “Third of May 1808” and this showed Spanish resistance fighters being shot by the Napoleon army.   7. The influence of Latin Televison • Today, Americans see more Hispanics than ever aired on TV. About 75% of the top 200 advertisers spent money on cable or broadcast advertising that is aimed at Hispanics. • Monica Gadsby is important because she is a hedge fund manager. She is a media buyer with lots of money. She spends it across the Hispanic and part of the US clients. She is part of the Starcom Media vest multicultural agencies. She is a client and a sale manager for Coca-cola, Wal-Mart, Kraft, Disney, and burger king. • Mario Kreutzberger and Jorge Ramos is a host and creator of Sabado Gigante He has been on Univision in the US since 1986 and reaches 100 million people in 42 countries.
