  3. Metacommunication • Prefix meta means ‘about’ combined with the root word communication • Used everyday for clarification • Hospital provides some training

  4. Active Listening • More than just using your ears • Learn to really focus on conversation • Shut out all distractions

  5. Active Listening continued… • Ways to shut out distractions are:>Closing doors>Stop what you are doing>Look at who you are speaking to

  6. Language Barriers • Makes it hard to communicate • Hospitals provide translators • Demonstrations of what you are about to do can help • “nonverbal behaviors account for 65% to 93% of the total meaning of communication”(Woods pg122)

  7. Conclusion • Communication is important • Advice: keep open mind and remember that everyone has a different perception • What someone perceives is their reality
