  3. Announcements • Brown Bag: Presenting Results of the Shaping Sustainability Survey • Thursday, March 12th, 2009 12pm-1pm in Urban Center 270 on the Portland State campus

  4. Water Footprints • Marks on Papers • Check mark means good or acknowledges point • Underlining usually means something is wrong—especially with question mark • Abstract: • Summarize results, main points—not a narrative introduction • STAND-ALONE representation • Methods: • How you got the numbers you used, not details about filling in calculator • How many liters in M^3? • Why is how much water you drink not included? • The idea of checks: What weights make sense in terms of 3000Kcal diet? (4Kcal/gr protein, 4 carbs, 9 fat, 7 alcohol) • Results: • coming out lower than world average? • number, label, captions on figures and tables; refer to from text • everybody surprised by water use for beef • not just water costs of beef • Hamburgers are the Hummers of Food in Global Warming: Scientists • Discussion • What country has the largest footprint (total vs. per capita) • India? Or China? Figure it out from per capita and population • How does reducing your consumption in Portland help those in developing country? • Mechanics • Waterfootprint.org plus 3 reliable references • Appendix • Several left it off—read directions

  5. UNST Learning Goals • Inquiry and Critical Thinking: Students will learn various modes of inquiry through interdisciplinary curricula—problem-posing, investigating, conceptualizing—in order to become active, self-motivated, and empowered learners. • Communication: Students will enhance their capacity to communicate in various ways—writing, graphics, numeracy, and other visual and oral means—to collaborate effectively with others in group work, and to be competent in appropriate communication technologies. • The Diversity of Human Experience: Students will enhance their appreciation for and understanding of the rich complexity of the human experience through the study of differences in ethnic and cultural perspectives, class, race, gender, sexual orientation, and ability. • Ethics and Social Responsibility: Students will expand their understanding of the impact and value of individuals and their choices on society, both intellectually and socially, through group projects and collaboration in learning communities. • Anything missing?

  6. Reflection on UNST Goals • Essay on Bad/Good Apples and Group Success (HW1) • Collapse research paper on assigned chapter • Group presentation on Collapse chapter • Julian Morris critique of Collapse (HW3) • Water footprint report • Take-home essay exam on Omnivore’s Dilemma • In-class (or in mentor session) discussions, activities, and short written works (e.g. creative writing activity on writing from a food item’s perspective).

  7. Ideas for Next Term • In groups, brainstorm ideas • Decide which seem doable • Gather ideas for whole class • Class discussion

  8. Looking at Solutions • ULTra: Urban Light Transit • PRT: Personal Rapid Transit • Sophomore Inquiry Sustainability Student (Aaron Rayburn) meeting with mayor’s office • “I sent an email every 48 hours for ten days and left about three voicemails with the office of the Mayor and was later contacted by Catherine Ciarlo who is the Transportation Adviser for the city of Portland. She was interested to meet with me and thanked me for my persistence. We have a meeting scheduled for 2pm next Monday, March 9th.”
