Gada regulated political, economic, social and religious activities of the community dealing with issues such as conflict resolution, reparation and protecting women’s rights before 1884

The History of Oromo’s relation with the Ethiopian Empire has always been the history of one way violence involving physical, cultural and economic genocide In the process of building the Ethiopian empire in 19th Century, • About half the population of Oromo were massacred • The population of Gimira was reduced from 1 million to 20,000 • The population of the Kaffa was reduced from 2 million to 100 thousands • The Oromo land was confiscated. • Jila, Chaffe, Irrecha and other institutions in the Gada system were legally banned. • The Abyssinian emperors, aided by the EOC, waged damaging religious and psychological wars against the Oromo. • The successive regimes followed footstep in more organised and strategic ways.

  15. The situation in Oromia is critical for peace and stability of East Africa. Would Actors choose to take the road that respects human rights, democracy, and the rule of law? Would the western democratic countries take lessons from their mistakes and stand by the Oromo before it gets too late?
