  3. Villages 3-5,000 years ago Government – Dictatorship, Oligarchy First places: Mesopotamia, China, India, Egypt, Central America Everyone knew everyone Agricultural Revolution Food Surplus leads to extra workers like artisans, blacksmiths, priests, politicians, soldiers

  4. City-States 2-3,000 years ago Government – Dictatorship, Oligarchy, Republic, Democracy First places: China, India, Greece, Central America, Mesopotamia Leaders didn’t know everyone Specialists (priests, politicians, soldiers) lead to specialized forms of government

  5. Empires 200-3,000 years ago Government – Dictatorship, Oligarchy, Republic First places: China, Egypt, Rome, Central America, Mesopotamia Leader peoples ruled other groups as second class people Armies created to conquer and rule Bureaucracies created to administer the empire

  6. Nation-States 500 years ago to today Government – Dictatorship, Monarchy, Oligarchy, Republic, Democracy First places: Europe, Asia People came together as one – same in language, culture, religion, etc… Nation-States started as Monarchies and eventually changedto democracies (mostly)

  7. Individualismand Equality 500 years ago to today Government – From Monarchy to Democracy First places: Europe People realized that they are not better or worse than others, they are equal as human beings Renaissance Enlightenment (Why?) from Science to Religion to Government to Society? Revolution and Democracy (French Revolution)

  8. Theories Force People submit to the person/group with the power to enforce their will Divine Right People are ruled by someone who is wiser than them because God chosethem Social Contract People make a deal to govern themselves in a way that benefits everyone Evolutionary Government naturally grows as populations and knowledge grow
