  1. Persuading Resistant Employees Overcoming objections and persuading employees, coworkers and management about the benefits of Lean www.uttana.com

  2. Resistant Employees • What happens when you have someone who is not only unconvinced but actively non-supportive towards a Lean transformation? • Lean teaches us that there is no barrier that cannot be overcome with the right insight www.uttana.com

  3. Understanding their resistance • It is essential to understand why they might be hostile to Lean. • Are they afraid that Lean reforms might eliminate their position? • Are they burnt out from previous reform efforts? • Is their resistance rooted in personality conflicts with management? www.uttana.com

  4. Workplace Culture • Workplace Culture: • If employees ideas are regularly ignored, it can lead to the belief that change is impossible. • Management has the ability to exert pressure to ensure compliance with a Lean initiative, but that rarely leads to true engagement. • If there is a culture of fear, people may be hesitant to offer new ideas. www.uttana.com

  5. Workplace Culture, cont. • However, work environment can improve • With the right approach, management and engaged employees can change the culture to one that supports and accepts new ideas. www.uttana.com

  6. Management by example • A manager should lead by example, taking risks and putting out new ideas to inspire others to do the same. www.uttana.com

  7. Other Strategies for Persuasion • What happens if they are still resistant? • Relocation. Move them to a different area of work • Frequent communication to prevent the spread of misinformation and reduce rumors www.uttana.com

  8. Recruit a co-worker • If their resistance is rooted in a personality conflict with management, recruit a co-worker to try to persuade them. • The same message coming from a different source might be better received. www.uttana.com

  9. Empower the Resistant Employee • Place the resistant employee in a position of authority over a small part of the Lean reform • As counterintuitive as this may sound, you can encourage them to become more invested in the processby giving them control • This also reduces their fear of how these efforts might turn out • Make sure there are clear, traceable metrics so any reluctance can be quickly identified www.uttana.com

  10. Termination • If none of these strategies work, it may be time for termination of that employee. It rarely happens but Lean requires the full support of those involved to truly eliminate waste. www.uttana.com

  11. Hearts and Minds • As part of a Lean implementation, sometimes the most difficult thing to transform is not processes and machines but the hearts and minds of people. www.uttana.com
