  1. EU INCO – DEV STRAPEAT PROJECTSTRATEGIES FOR IMPLEMENTING SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF PEATLAND IN BORNEO NICOLA WALDES, UNILEI The Effects of Fire on Peatswamp Forest Vegetation & the Use of Molecular Genetics to Aid Conservation & Management for Their Future

  2. FIELD OBJECTIVES 2002 - 2003 • DOCUMENT THE VEGETATION • Collecting • Cimtrop Herbarium - Continued supervision and planning • Equipment/Resources • Guide to common trees of NL • SURVEY 2002 FIRE DAMAGE • Aerial film • Ground surveys • STUDY REGENERATION OF PSF • 6 week regrowth, Kalamp. • 5 year regrowth, Kalamp. • Unburnt forest, Kalamp. • Burnt TIF, NL • COLLECT TREE DNA • Gonystylus bancanus • Other selected PSF trees

  3. PROGRESS : DOCUMENTING THE FIRES Natural Laboratory

  4. Progress: Regeneration of the Vegetation • 6 – 8 Weeks Regrowth: Surveyed, Transect ‘B’, Continual renumeration in progress. Results: 3 species fern, some other shrubs listed, but not in quadrats. • 5 Year Regrowth: Surveyed, Transect ‘A’, Renumeration in progress. Results: 77 plant species identified in 5 plots. Lots of Cratoxylum arborescens & C. glaucum. • Unburnt Area: In progress, Transect ‘C’. Established 2 Research Assistants with Cimtrop. • Encouraging diversity in 5 year regrowth. • Massive loss of psf (& seedbank) in 2002 fires. • Much forest now burnt twice. Pristine psf not susceptible to fire (Megarice, logging). Kalampangan Canal, 08/11/2002

  5. USING MOLECULAR GENETICS TO INVESTIGATE PSF DYNAMICS • Genetic sequences may be compared between individuals of a population to determine relative distance of ancestry. • Sometimes a ‘molecular clock’ may be constructed from known events/fossils/sequences. • Choosing plants that are associated with psf is therefore a useful indicator of the dynamics of psf over recent time. • Ribosomal DNA (rDNA) has been used successfully within this project to look at Gonystylus bancanus populations across Borneo. • To further substantiate the evidence, it is planned to use other genomic sequences and other psf endemics. • Knowing how the psf adapted to previous environmental change helps us to predict future changes. Gonystylus bancanus Tetramerista glabra

  6. THANKYOU! Quassia borneensis Elaeocarpus sp. Elaeocarpus sp.
