  3. Classic drive theory • The probability of dominant behaviors increases as the levels of drive rise. • Has been empirically proven in drives such as hunger and thirst. • Do higher levels of sex drive lead to increased sexual attraction to both men and women? Or do higher levels of sex drive lead to increased sexual attraction in only one sex?

  4. Hypothesis • Higher levels of sex drive would lead to increased sexual attraction to a male’s dominant pattern of sexual desire. • Females with a high sex drive would be attracted to both sexes. • For homosexuality and bisexuality: • males tend to develop an “either-or” concept while females do not

  5. Study 1 • Looked only at heterosexual participants. • Male participants showed a positive attraction to women and a negative attraction to men. • Females showed positive attractions to both men and women.

  6. Study 2 • Looked at the homosexual men and women from the first study. Other homosexual men and women were also surveyed • Homosexual men showed a positive attraction to men and a negative attraction to women. • Homosexual women showed positive attractions to both men and women that were of similar degrees.

  7. Study 3 • 34 item “sexual attitude and feelings” scale (Lippa 49). • Heterosexual men were attracted to women but not men. • Homosexual men were attracted to men but not women. • Homosexual women were attracted to women and not men. • Heterosexual women were attracted to both men and women.

  8. Results • Men with a high sex drive, no matter the sexual orientation, tend to be attracted to one sex. • Heterosexual women with a high sex drive tend to be attracted to both men and women • Studies 2 and 3 conflicted with results about homosexual women.

  9. Homosexual Women • In Study #2, lesbians were attracted to both men and women, which would support the hypothesis • Study #3 showed that lesbians are attracted to women and not men. • Some lesbian women display more “male” traits. • Men tend to be attracted to physical stimuli while women tend to be more attracted to personalities.
