  1. Major Event and Festival Impacts Seminar One: From Hallmark to Mega Events

  2. The Module – what is it all about? • This module considers the multitude of impacts, positive and negative, that accompany the hosting of major events and festivals. Major events and festivals include sports events, cultural celebrations and corporate events. Students will be exposed to those impacts proposed by event owners, governments (local, national and transnational), communities and corporations and will reflect upon the appropriateness of the evaluation techniques that are employed to measure the professed benefits. The module will utilise case studies of major events to enhance the teaching and learning experience.

  3. The Module – how it works • Module handbook • The blog • Structure • Conceptualising major events and festivals • Understanding major events and festivals • Major events and festival case studies • Assignments • EventIMPACTS website

  4. Student Led Seminars • Each week students will lead the first 45-60 mins of the class • You will work in groups of 2-3 • In this time we will look to link together the subjects covered in the lecture with a specific event • You will be required to provide an overview of the event and identify the ways in which it links with the subject area • This is not a presentation! You should develop tasks and activities for the class to complete. The more you can get them to do the less you will have to do. • Be creative, use photos, clips, etc • Remember, we all learn from each other so spend time developing your seminar – don’t leave it to the last minute. You will not only let yourself down but everyone else in the class.

  5. Main Lessons from the Lecture • Events can be defined and categorised in various different ways • However, they all share similar characteristics • Major events tend to be large scale, short term and high profile • Until recently events have tended to be analysed in terms of their economic impact but we are now seeing an increased interest in their broader impacts • Roche (2000) suggests that we should take a multi-dimensional perspective when examining mega events and offers a three fold typology for analysis • Modern/non modern • National/non national • Local/non local • He also offers a form of spatial and temporal analyses for events • Event core • Event context • Event horizon

  6. Discussion Topics • How would you define major events and their common features and differences? Use examples to highlight the points that you make. • Critically discuss Roche’s (2000) conceptual framework for understanding mega events. How relevant is this and how does it fit with the events that you have previously discussed. • Examine each of the dimensions of Roche’s (2000) event time related periods. Identity and discuss events which fit in each of these time periods.
