Before Title IX • Female participation in athletics was discouraged due to the belief that athletic activity would damage reproductive organs. • Female athletic opportunities were primarily in cheerleading. Benefits of Athletics for Females Decreased risk of breast, endometrial & colon cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, depression, hypertension, etc Higher self-esteem Increased self-confidence Decreased risk of getting pregnant in high school Increased chance of going on to college Decreased risk of dropping out of high school Decreased chance of being in an abusive relationship

Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 • “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” • Implemented in 1975 • Includes sports, academics, sexual harassment, etc

Title IX’s effect on female athletic participation • Title IX increased high school female varsity athletic participation from 1 in 27 (294,015) to 1 in 3 (3,057,266) females over 36 years. • Male participation in high school varsity athletics was 1 in 2 in 2007. • 1992 to 1996 Olympics, 27% increase in number of female athletes participating.
