  1. IDIOMS By Alanna and Addison Mrs. Houston 4th Grade Britt David Magnet Academy

  2. You ever wonder what Idioms are?

  3. IDIOMS Well…. … according to Webster’s Dictionary, Idioms are, “A group of words established by usage as having a meaning not deducible from those of the individual words.” ……………Blah blahblah!!!!

  4. So…… what did that mean??????

  5. What if Addison and Alanna show you some of them in a way that you can understand much easier? AHHHHHHH!!!

  6. Well let’s get started…..

  7. Drive someone up the wall:

  8. Well….. It doesn’t REALLY mean to DRIVE someone UP A WALL…. It means to irritate or annoy someone very much

  9. Pulling Your Leg!

  10. This DOES NOT really mean pulling someone’s leg off. It means tricking someone as a joke.

  11. From Rags……………

  12. …To Riches!!!!!!

  13. Now this says just what it means….. To go from being very poor to being very wealthy.

  14. Put a sock in it!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. THAT’s RIGHT!!!!! To tell a noisy person or a group to be quiet.

  16. A taste of your own medicine

  17. Well …. Getting ‘a taste of your own medicine’ means that something happens to you, or is done to you, that you have done to someone else. Kind of like TIT for TAT ….AND…. Medicine often tastes bad! YUK!

  18. ALL BARK….AND….NO BITE!!!!

  19. When someone is all talk and no action!

  20. A CHIP ON YOUR SHOULDER

  21. Being upset for something that has happened in the past or to hold a grudge or be angry…..

  22. At the Drop of a Hat

  23. OH MY GOSH!!! DID YOU SEE THAT? IT HAPPENED SO FAST!!! If you do something at the drop of a hat, you do it suddenly and easily, often without any preparation

  24. SO WHY DO WE USE IDIOMS? To make communicating more interesting & creative IDIOMS can add spice & variety to the ordinary  They can also be used for emphasis  ……………………………………… Without IDIOMS… language, would be pretty boring!
