Special Verbs. By Cheryl Hamilton Grade 1. An action word or verb is something you can do. Action Verbs. run jump swim talk. If the action is being done by one person , the verb will need to end with the letter s. Example. Sandy spins the globe in class.

  2. An action word or verb is something you can do.

  3. Action Verbs • run • jump • swim • talk

  4. If the action is being done by one person, the verb will need to end with the letter s.

  5. Example • Sandy spins the globe in class.

  6. If the action is being done by more than one person, the verb will not need the letter s added.

  7. Example • Sue and Sanford study for the test.

  8. Verbs can tell what the action is now or what the action was in the past. Verbs that tell about the past end with –ed.

  9. The class visits the zoo. The class visited the zoo.

  10. Now for something new!

  12. Some of these words are used to show action now, and some tell about the past. • Here’s how the words are sorted. • NOW • am • is • are • PAST • was • were

  13. They are also used to tell about one or more than one. • ONE • am • is • was • MORE THAN ONE • are • were

  14. Tip! • Am can only be used with the word “I.”

  15. Example • I am not afraid of ducks!

  16. Example • The castle is fun.

  17. Example • We are dancing.

  18. Example • Cheryl was a cute baby.

  19. Example • We were at Fort Necessity.
