Sec. 9-2: Multiplying & Factoring

Sec. 9-2: Multiplying & Factoring. To multiply a MONOMIAL with a polynomial, simply distribute the monomial through to EACH term of the polynomial. i.e. 2x(3x 2 – 4x + 5) 2x( 3x 2 – 4x + 5 ) 6x 3 - 8x 2 + 10x Do: 3y(2y 4 – 3y 3 + 7y 2 – 5y + 4).

  1. Sec. 9-2: Multiplying & Factoring

  2. To multiply a MONOMIAL with a polynomial, simply distribute the monomial through to EACH term of the polynomial. i.e. 2x(3x2 – 4x + 5) 2x(3x2– 4x + 5) 6x3 - 8x2+ 10x Do: 3y(2y4 – 3y3 + 7y2 – 5y + 4)

  3. FACTORING a polynomial “undoes” multiplication. GCF: Greatest Common Factor: A number &/or variables that go into EACH term of a polynomial. i.e. Factor: 12x2y – 6xy2 + 10xy What goes into EVERY term? 2xy 2xy(6x – 3y + 5) You can check your answer by multiplying.

  4. Factor: 16b4 – 4b3 + 8b2 Now, check you answer by multiplying… You should get back the original trinomial. 4b2(4b2 – b + 2)
