  1. Selective in the use of Facts • If a person is being selective they are only giving their opinion – one side of the story. • In Modern Studies you must be able to tell whether a person is being selective in their opinions.

  2. Selective in the use of Facts • For this type of question you must look at 3 sources and someone’s view. • Worth 8 marks • We will look at a question from the 2008 Intermediate 2 paper.

  3. Selective in the use of Facts • The person’s view is related to the Sources and can refer to more than one issue. • For example: The Scottish Parliament is effective both in representing the people of Scotland and in carrying out its devolved powers. View of Nazia Issa

  5. Selective in the use of Facts • The person’s view is related to the Sources and can refer to more than one issue. • For example: The Scottish Parliament is effective both in representing the people of Scotland and in carrying out its devolved powers. View of Nazia Issa

  6. How to write your answer: • Identify one of the views of the person: Nazia Issa claims that “The Scottish Parliament is effective…in representing the people of Scotland”.

  7. How to write your answer: • Identify one of the views of the person: Nazia Issa claims that “The Scottish Parliament is effective…in representing the people of Scotland”. • Then find evidence in one or more of the sources which is relevant to the view (you may use highlighters): Source 1 shows that 51% of the Scottish population is female but Source 2 tells us that only one third of MSPs are female. (Extra credit is given when more than one source is used to make a point - when you synthesise sources).

  8. How to write your answer: Therefore Nazia Issa is being slightly selective when she says that the Scottish Parliament is effective in representing the people of Scotland since women are not well represented.

  9. Nazia Issa claims that “The Scottish Parliament is effective…in representing the people of Scotland”. Source 1 shows that 51% of the Scottish population is female but Source 2 tells us that only one third of MSPs are female. Therefore Nazia Issa is being selective when she says that the Scottish Parliament is effective in representing the people of Scotland since women are not well represented.

  10. She also says that the parliament is effective in representing the people of Scotland. Source 1 says that a variety of political parties have seats in the parliament. Source 2 says that the AMS system produces a proportional result. Therefore she is not being selective because the sources show that people are well represented.

  11. She also says that the government has been effective in carrying out its devolved powers. Source 2 says that the government will find it difficult to pass the laws they want to- for example in health and education. Therefore she is being selective as the government are not being very effective in carrying out its devolved powers as they may not get laws passed.

  12. How to write your answer: • Finish by stating how selective the statement by the person is: Therefore Nazia Issa is being selective when she says that the Scottish Parliament is effective in representing the people of Scotland since women are not well represented. • By repeating this process 4 times you will receive 8 marks.

  13. Remember… • Identify one of the views of the person • Then find evidence in one of the sources which is relevant to the view • Finish each point by stating how selective the statement by the person is Note: You do not have do write an overall statement of selectivity at the end as you did at Standard Grade.
