  2. What it does • The respiratory system shares responsibility with the cardiovascular system for supplying the body with oxygen and disposing of carbon dioxide. • The organs respiratory system oversee the gas exchanges that occur between the blood and external environment.

  3. What it is made of • Nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and the lungs. • Nose- the only visible part of the respiratory system. Air enters here. • Pharynx- The air continues from the nose down to the pharynx, which is the muscular passageway, also known as the throat. Common passage way for food and air. • Larynx- the voice box, sends food and air through the proper tubes and helps you speak. • Trachea- also called the windpipe, this is the only way the air can enter the lungs. • Bronchi- formed by the trachea, when the air reaches the bronchi it is already cleaned and warmed and is sent to the air sacs. • Lungs- it is large and takes up the whole thoracic cavity (except for the heart’s area) gas exchange takes place here.

  4. Respiratory Physiology • The four events for the body to be supplied with oxygen or commonlycalled respiration. • Pulmonary ventilation- or breathing- air moves in and out of the lungs. • External Respiration- Gas exchange/ Oxygen loading and carbon dioxide unloading- breathing out • Respiratory gas transport- Oxygen and Carbon dioxide are transported through the bloodstream. • Internal Respiration- this is gas being exchanged between the blood and cells inside the body.
