  2. Step One: Eligibility • Go to www.jkcf.org to review specific criteria • There are no exceptions to eligibility requirements • If you still have questions regarding eligibility, contact : Juan.B.Garcia@lonestar.edu

  3. STEP TWO : Getting Ready • This is a competitive scholarship which requires a thoughtful and deliberate documentation of why you are a worthy recipient of this award. • Take a look at the current scholars to reflect on your own accomplishments. • Some things you should have as you work on your application: • A Resume • A list of potential people you can ask for a reference letter. • A timeline for working on and submitting all documentation.

  4. STEP Three : Documentation • Register and create a password for your application process • Complete the Online Application • Request Transcripts • Request Recommendations *Recommendations are completed online.

  5. Step Three: Continued • When requesting recommendations, keep the following in mind: • Request recommendations from people you have developed a relationship with and who know your work. • Provide a resume so that the reference is aware of your work and involvement. • Make sure the person providing the reference letter is a good writer. • Make the request as soon as possible so that the writer has ample time to craft a recommendation.

  6. Step Four: Upload Required Documentation • All documentation must be submitted in order for you to be considered. • Upload official transcripts • Upload required financial documentation including: *Tax Forms * Student Aid Report from 2010-11 FAFSA

  7. Step Five: Writing the Essays • Essays should highlight your work and accomplishments. • In your narrative always use specific examples. For example: “Leadership is an important part of my college experience, as an officer of ___I have …….” • Be succinct, you want to highlight as much as you can within the word limits. • Plan to have faculty, mentors or peers review and provide feedback for your work before the deadline.

  8. Step Five: Continued • Write/Edit/Re-write your ”Narrative Biography” (500 word limit) • Write/Edit/Re-write your two required essays (300 word limit)

  9. Step Six: MakeContact • Contact your campus JKC Faculty Representative and make an appointment to meet and discuss your application. • http://www.lonestar.edu/jackkentcooke.htm

  10. Step Seven: Revise and Submit • Revise your essays, upload, and save the completed application. • Notify your campus Faculty Representative that your application is complete no later than January 19, 2011.
