  1. Investigations, tables, graphs and Ideas

  2. What is being investigated here ?

  3. What was the independent variable ? the different liquids What was the dependent variable ? the temperature Suggest a control variable ? eg the same size paper tissue Describe what happened with the propanone experiment the temperature went down then went up Explain what happened with the propanone experiment While the propanone was evaporating the temperature went down and when it had all evaporated the temperature started to go up Why is it important that the starting temperatures are the same ? to make a fair comparison

  4. What is being investigated ? What was the independent variable ? How much the tablet is broken up What was the dependent variable ? the time taken to dissolve the more the tablet is broken up the less time taken to dissolve What is the pattern in the table ? What is being investigated ? Suggest the time for 65oC ? What was the independent variable ? the temperature of the water What was the dependent variable ? the time taken to dissolve the higher the temperature the less time taken to dissolve What is the pattern in the table ?

  5. Why do you think the table shows data for 100g each of chips, boiled & peeled potato and potato baked in its skin ? so the different ways of cooking potato can be compared fairly Are the units for water, fat, fibre and vitamin C all the same ? no: water, fat and fibre are in g, vitamin C is in mg From the data in the table, what is the main difference between chips and other ways of cooking potatoes ? chips have more fat What are the main differences between boiled peeled potato and baked potato in its skin ? boiled peeled potato has more water, less fibre and less vitamin C

  6. You have 8 mins to answer these questions

  7. (a) What was the independent variable in this investigation ? different liquids ether (b) Suggest which liquid evaporated most rapidly ? (c) After 6 minutes the reading went up on the thermometer dipped in ether. Explain why. the ether had completely evaporated (d) What is the likely temperature of the room in which they did the experiment ? 23oC

  8. results of group 1 the temperature of the water

  9. water skin 2 x 9 = 18 2 x 14 = 28

  10. Some more questions involving tables

  11. mm

  12. What was this investigation about ? Looking at variation Which variables are continuous and which are discontinuous ? What would you have to do to check the following conclusion ? The taller a person is, the greater their arm span What do you think of this conclusion ? Boys do not have green eyes

  13. Some questions involving graphs

  14. Describe the pattern in the graph In 1960, 40 per 100,000 died 2 million = 2,000,000 2,000,000 divided by 100,000 = 20 Therefore the answer is 20 x 40 = 800 Q This question is difficult ! The population of Paris is about 2 million. Approximately how many people in Paris died from cirrhosis of the liver in 1960 ? ………………………………………………….. …………………………………………………………………………

  15. Describe the pattern in the graph 3.5

  16. Independent variable Dependent variable What will be the X axis ? What will be the Y axis ? What scales will you use ? What kind of line will you draw ? Plot a graph of these results

  17. 9 8 7 6 How did you score ? pH 5 4 volume or alkali in cm3 on the X axis AND pH on the Y axis – 1 mark 3 appropriate scales for volume of alkali and pH – 1 mark 11 points correctly plotted – 1 mark 2 smooth curve of best fit – 1 mark 1 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16 18 20 Volume of alkali (cm3)

  18. Some questions about ideas and the history of science You have got 9 mins to do these questions

  19. What would be the independent variable ? the 3 different metals What would be the dependent variable ? the change in mass Name a control variable ? the starting mass of metal if there was an increase in mass What evidence would support Lavoisier’s idea ? because oxygen combines with the metal Explain your answer to the last question ?
