  2. Scene Selection For my electronic collage, I chose the scene in Unwind where Roland, the antagonist, is getting unwound. This scene above all others in the book struck an emotional chord with me because up until this point in the book, despised Roland and wanted him to get unwound. My feelings changed dramatically for him though when as he was being unwound, organ by organ, limb by limb, he recalled the horrific book that was his life. As a teacher, this reminded of so many students who come to school daily, many acting out, some seemingly perfect, but their lives outside of school are dismal, oppressive and more than painful.

  3. Scene Selection continued • As a teacher, this reminded of so many students who come to school daily, many acting out, some seemingly perfect, but their lives outside of school are dismal, oppressive and more than painful

  4. Characters in the scene & Character analysis The only main character in the selected scene is Roland. The other characters are unnamed doctors, nurses, technicians. There is one nurse in charge of simply talking to him throughout the entire process. Roland up to this point has been cruel and conniving, but he is also very intelligent. When he first met Connor, the main character, he goaded him into a fight by pretending he was going to rape Connor’s friend Risa. He stole medicine in order to put in the food of other unwinds so he could make them sick then blame the admiral for giving them bad food. His motive was to make other leaders look bad so all the unwinds would follow him. He had to be the center of attention at all times.

  5. Summary Roland, the most hated character in the book, was on the table in the operating room being unwound. He has been anesthetized so as they are cutting his body parts away, he feels nothing but slight tugs. He is having flashbacks during this time and talking to the nurse about his life.
