  1. Regional Empires Project Presentation

  2. Rationale • Inquiry/student selected topics • NxGL convening… new version of World history • Research empires of interest (but are relevant to the course) • Collaborative groups • Development of professional (21st C. skills) • Application of skills and knowledge gathered in previous units • Mapping, timelines, argumentation, Conrad Demarest Model, technology…

  3. Collaboration • Amy Lentz (7 years of collaboration) • Frequent recipe: Bob = new idea or goal, Amy = logistics and quality control… product = well balanced • Shared my idea for feedback • Started working on idea • Shared the idea with rest of World CTP • Opt in to assist in creation of the product • Reflection: Fewer is easier, the moment the idea is shared it is subject to change… what is the comfort level/degree of acceptable compromise? (Rhetorical…sorry!)

  4. Learning Targets • The goal of the unit is to have students apply the empire model to regional empires • Created the following LT: Evaluate regional empires using the empire model. • The final product would assess this target (as well as other things) but the checkpoints would also serve as formative assessments to indicate which groups (individuals would need assistance/remediation) • Reflection: Write a social target as well, I stressed the behavioral and functional requirements and even assessed those components

  5. Implementation • Lot’s of components = considerable time (need to have benchmarks/checkpoints) • Broke the task into portions • Grouped by ability from previous empire unit • Contracts (expectations and conduct were assessed) • Pre-test to assess group functioning and build community (eClicker as a team) • Begin task • Review and increase • Final production • Assess/reflect/feedback

  6. Assignment • After groups/contracts/eClicker… Directions, explanation of the assignment/expectations purpose • Selection of empires • Roles/division of labor • Mapping/time-lining as skills and as future evidence • Rubric One (Largely skills and organizing information into the empire model) • How it is graded • Degree of information required • Reflection: Format was solid, students were confident and informed… I was impressed with results (step by step approach, requiring checkpoints, and not rushing to final product were critical (gathering evidence)

  7. Part Two • After demonstrating proficiency… groups began to make Claims and organize evidence using a CER template (requiring teacher approval) • Groups then focused on creating a product to share those arguments (suggestions were offered, many still chose PowerPoint… limited exposure to others?) • Rubric Two: not just information but quality of information (comparisons or just statements, best examples)

  8. Student Reflections • Students reflected on: the concept, the assignment, their performance, group performance FEEDBACK from Surveys: -Select own groups (hard to work with partners) -more work time yet (7 days, roughly) -enjoyed the freedom of topic and product -felt prepared for the material -too much paper… break down even further or relax the requirements

  9. Samples • Prezi – Johnston • Video – Yang • PowerPoint – Johnson • PowerPoint - Evans

  10. Reflections • Behavior was surprising good (contracts, structure, checkpoints)… • Pick specific social/collaborative skills to narrow focus onto • Meeting with groups was difficult - some required lots of attention which limited availability to other groups (attendance concerns too groups vs. individual) • Some sort of workshop on using different programs to avoid PowerPoint's… broaden their options • Try to simplify paperwork to avoid “overkill” aspect of directions/expectations • Resources are a limiting factor (few iPads, laptop access, no lab access) • Reserve for relevant topics (connections to modern, CER, models/examples)… takes time and front-loading
