  3. The Blight Begins • September 1845 • Ireland • Potato plants suddenly turned black and curled, then rotted. • It was like a fog that had drifted through the air. • It was a fungus carried by ships going back and forth from America.

  4. Crazy Fungal Spores • Potatoes were the Irish's main food source. • Fungal Spores settled on the leaves of these plants. They then withered and died. • The fungal Spores were carried in millions by cool breezes. • One potato plant that was infected by these spores could affect a thousand other plants.

  5. Unscientific theories • People had many theories of what this “fog” was. • Some thought it was static electricity in the air from the locomotive trains. • Others thought it was volcanoes emiting a “mortiferous vapor” from the earth’s core.
