  2. Challenges • Massive infrastructure development in NW ($100Bn?) • Huge increases in traffic • Remote locations • Environmental issues • Jurisdictional issues • Labour shortages

  4. Some statistics • Reported to DPI for the years 05 – 07: • 05/06 – 70 incidents, 23 injuries, 1 fatality • 06/07 – 98 incidents, 19 injuries, 4 fatalities • More work is needed on data, reporting and responses

  5. Future plans • Closer cooperation with other agencies: • ATSB – renewal of previous agreement • NOPSA – new agreement • AMSA – • Worksafe WA – review and renewal of existing agreement • WAPOL – renewal of agreement

  6. Future plans • New legislation and procedures • Maritime Bill - better and clearer powers • Intervention, investigation, prosecution • Blood Alcohol Bill – B A Concentrations, • testing regimes, drug testing? • Introduction of NSCV Parts D and E • Codes of conduct • SMS and audits

  7. • Industry in crisis due to: • Lack of coherent, sensible and workable national shipping policy; • Labour shortages • Recruitment below sustainable levels • Lack of single, national regulatory framework If planes and trains can do it, why not ships?
