  2. 4 Dimensions of digital strategy

  3. What we’ll cover today • Twitter Basics • How to use Twitter to target your Member of Congress • Sample targeted tweets to End of Breast Cancer Act

  4. Twitter Basics Basic Twitter Glossary • Handle: A username, indicated by the @ symbol before it • Mentions or @ symbol. The @ sign is used to identify, mention or reply toother users on Twitter • If you want a specific person to see your message, you’ll want to include their @handle in the message.  Even if they follow you, they may miss it otherwise.

  5. Twitter Basics • Retweet (RT) – A tweet that someone else wrote that you are sharing with your followers. To retweet, copy and paste the tweet and add RT @username before the tweet • Direct Message (DM)  - A private message to another Twitter user (only if they follow you back) • Follow- Opting in to receive someone's tweets in your Twitter feed • MT - A "modified tweet," meaning the retweet has been slightly edited for length or content • Trends - A list of popular hashtags that appears on Twitter's front page • Hashtag – A keyword in a tweet that is linked to a search of tweets containing that keyword; Designated with a “#” in front of the keyword

  6. Targeting your members of Congress on twitter • Tweet @ your Senators and/or Representative to ask or thank them for support. Example: I had a great talk w/ @LisaMurkowski. Like @Deadline2020, she supports #HR1830 Accelerating End of Breast Cancer Act. #BCD2020 • Even if they don’t have a Twitter handle, mention them by name. Example: We're meeting w/ Rep. Joe Pitts (#PA) to ask him to support the Accelerating End of Breast Cancer Act. #HR1830 #BCD2020 #BCSM

  7. Targeting your members of Congress on twitter • Always check for & use the Twitter handle for anyone you mention in your tweets. • Easiest to use Google: Search for “FnameLname Twitter” • When posting anything related to the End Breast Cancer Deadline, include the official #BCD2020 hashtag so NBCC can keep track of your tweets and retweet you. • When you have room, use other related hashtags to broaden your audience: • #BCSM – Breast Cancer Social Media community • #Fem2 – Women’s issues community; progressive women • #SGP – Smart Girl Politics; conservative women

  8. Targeting your members of Congress on twitter • If you are referring to a specific Bill, make sure to use the hashtag related to this specific Bill. For example for the H.R. 1830 Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act, would be the #HR1830 hashtag

  9. Targeting your members of Congress on twitter • When you attending summits and other events and you live-tweet them, make sure to know the event’s hashtag, plus the speakers twitter handles, and mention them when you send out tweets related to the event

  10. Important Hashtags to use to push your content to reach beyond your audience • Issues: Breast cancer: #BCD2020, #BreastCancer, #BCSM, General Health/Cancer issues: #healthissues, #WorldHealthDay, #cancersurvivor, #endcancer • Ideology: Progressives: #p2, #fem2, #topprog, #UniteBlue Conservatives: #tcot, #tlot, #teaparty, #SGP • Cross-Conversations Cross-Ideology: #p2 #tcot Targeted actions: #PlsRT #bcsm
