  2. 2nd Commandment • Many think this is part of the first commandment. • The 1st commandment – No Other Gods • God demands undivided loyalty • The 2nd commandment – No Idols • We need to worship the right God. • We also need to worship Him in the right way.

  3. Graven Images – False Gods • Some use graven images to represent false gods. • Idolatry is Ignorant • Isaiah 40:18-19 - To whom then will you liken God? Or what likeness will you compare to Him? 19 The workman molds an image, The goldsmith overspreads it with gold, And the silversmith casts silver chains. • Idolatry is more than ignorant – it is contemptible.

  4. Graven Images – True God • Some use graven images to represent the True God – Jehovah. • Golden Calf - • This was not a pagan god from Egypt. • They were not worshipping the calf. • They were worshipping Jehovah.

  5. Graven Images – True God Exodus 32:5 So when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it. And Aaron made a proclamation and said, “Tomorrow is a feast to the LORD.”

  6. Images – Always a Detriment • Many deny that they worship the image. • “We venerate the icon – We worship who it represents.” • That is exactly what Israel did. • Very fine line between “venerate” and “worship”

  7. Images – Obscure God’s Glory • A likeness of “things” does not show God. • Men worship “things” rather than God. • “Things” cannot show: • Love of God • Mercy of God • Patience of God • Power of God

  8. Images – Obscure God’s Glory • How many of you like the photo on your driver’s license? • Why not? • It dishonors you • It does not show your “good side”

  9. Images – False Ideas about God • When they built the calf to remind them of Jehovah – • They did many immoral things • 1 Corinthians 10:7 - And do not become idolaters as were some of them. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play

Right Way to Worship God • In spirit and truth • John 4:23-24 – 23But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

  15. Conclusion: • We must worship the true God – Jehovah • We do a stupid thing when our loyalty is divided. • We must worship Him as He directs • We do a stupid thing when we try to make an image of God.
