  3. Gender Symbols • Male or “Phallic” Symbols- symbols are usually reminiscent of a penis. • Stand for male dominance, potency, power • Always pointed- symbolic of the male drive to move outward and expand their influence. • Sticks • Staves • Knives • Swords • Clubs • Towers • Trees

  4. Male Rites of Passage • Establishing themselves as equals of their father, and separating themselves from their mothers. • Males often are encouraged to move out. • Their rituals are usually physically based. • Examples?

  5. Gender Symbols • Female or “Yonic “Symbols • Celebrates femininity, reproductive potential, and fertility • Symbols are reminiscent vagina • Common Symbols • Cups • Chalice • Tunnels • Cave • Wells • Circles • Hoops

Female Rites of Passage • Females are encouraged to settle down • The unavoidable rite of passage is a female’s first cycle. • However, modern rites of passage are typically mental, showing females searching for value in ability outside of breeding potential. • For example, breaking up with your first love to find you have something more to offer the world • In other cultures, rites of passage take the form of beautifying oneself to find a suitable mate. • Examples?

  7. Through the Tunnel • Note the difference between the tan boys and the English boy- both physically and behaviorally • Note the English boy’s attachment to his mother • Identify symbols within the story that point to the boy’s rites of passage. • Also note the ritual and taboo within the story
