  1. Janet Infrastructure, London Region Procurement & Migration RSC Meeting – Senate House 4th December 2013

  2. Procurement • During RNO in sourcing Janet would usually take the opportunity to refresh the regional network infrastructure. • Janet6 has undertaken this element already for London. • We are therefore only procuring point to point connections between the Janet PoP’s in London and customer premises.

  3. Current London region Three current PoP’s: • ULCC • Imperial College • King’s College • UCL also provides connectivity for a number of Janet customers. 4x10G GE VzB 4x10G GE VzB

  5. London Infrastructure – Janet 6 Fibre

  6. London Infrastructure – Fibre routes

  7. Contractual arrangements • All customer connections are currently on a Vodafone contract which have the same end date – 29th March 2014. • We have arranged a contract extension with Vodafone (if required) on a single circuit basis that will allow an extension by up to 6 months (in rolling 30 day increments) • The contract with Virgin Media was signed 7th November 2013. • The contract will be for an initial 4 year period with options to extend for a further 2 years (1+1) • There is scope for additional connections to be procured via this contractual arrangement.

  8. Contractual arrangements – cont’d • Kings College – removal as a PoP wef 30th March 2014 • Additional connections for customers will be delivered via a resilient diverse route to a different Janet PoP. • Connections will be spread across the 4 London PoP’s • ULCC • Imperial College • Telecity Powergate • Telehouse West

  9. Communication • Every customer within London will have received an e-mail from me outlining the options for both their primary and back-up connections (if you have one) • The e-mail also served to provide important information on: • B-end shifts • Landlord permissions • Estates departments • Further contact from VM for site survey access • The removal of redundant equipment • Janet(UK) database requirements • Cost of connections – the procurement has driven the cost of connectivity down. • This has afforded the opportunity for customers to consider increased bandwidth or an additional connection where it was perhaps unaffordable in the past.

  10. Communication – cont’d • Since the contract has been signed Janet(UK) has been working on setting up workflows to match the requirements and agreements reached with each customer on their connections. • These workflows will establish: • Contact details for the site • Confirm the specific B-end details • Confirm the Janet PoP to be used • Outline any financial implications for your institution • Serve as the main communication point going forward to track the progress of the circuit order. • General communication about the procurement will be undertaken via the community portal https://community.ja.net/groups/janet-london or you can contact me directly if you have any questions.

  11. Communication – cont’d • Once the workflows have been set-up, communications about your specific circuit order(s) will be dealt with via circuits-provisioning@ja.net and Louise Cleaver and James Barron will be your main contacts.

  12. Circuit delivery • We are expecting circuits to start being delivered from February right through to June 2014. • The Local Authority embargo on work (digging etc.) begins on 13th December and doesn’t end until 16th January 2014. • Virgin Media have a change freeze which starts on 16th December through to 2nd January 2014 • These aspects will affect delivery dates, as you yourselves will also have similar restrictions regarding access etc over the Christmas period. Although, we are expecting other non service affecting parts of the build process to continue.

  13. Circuit delivery • Circuit termination: • 100Mb connections will be RJ45 with Cat 5 UTP • 1Gb circuits we have also asked for copper presentation (RJ45 with Cat 5 UTP) • If you own your own routing hardware then you can specify a fibre presentation if required. The standard presentation is1000BASE SX, Multi mode, LC/PC • 10Gb connections will be delivered as 10GBASE-LR, Single mode, LC/PC • The numbers: • 100Mb connections = 37 • 1Gb connections = 87 • 2Gb connections = 12 • 10Gb connections = 8

  14. Migration • Once circuits are delivered we are expecting to migrate customers from their old connection to the new connection within a 2 week timeframe. • This will be at a mutually convenient time • We are expecting the majority of migrations to occur with normal business hours (9 a.m. To 5 p.m. Monday to Friday) • Although there is, of course the opportunity to book a slot within the normal maintenance window of 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. on a Tuesday • If you have requirements outside of these hours we will use best endeavours to accommodate you. • We are expecting to migrate each circuit individually – there is no requirement to migrate both a primary and back up connection at the same time.

  15. Migration – cont’d • There will be two teams who will liaise directly with you for migration: • Customers with Janet(UK) MRS routers will be served by Kanji Bhodia and Nehal Shah from the Network Engineering Group (NEG) • HE and all other customers will be served by Tony Hacche and Dave Tinkler from the Core Architecture Team (CAT) • The exact process for migration will be communicated to you early in the New Year.
