  1. Daily Quiz Calculate the empirical formula for the following compound – 17.15% C, 1.44% H, 81.41% F

  2. Mole Airlines Project Counts as two tests in the 4th quarter

  3. Standards: • C-4.4 Apply the concept of moles to determine the percent composition of a representative compound, the mass proportions, and the mole-mass relationships. • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.11-12.7 Integrate and evaluate multiple sources of information presented in diverse formats and media (e.g., quantitative data, video, multimedia) in order to address a question or solve a problem.

  4. Objectives: • Utilize percent composition data to determine the empirical formula and identify unknown substances • Using analysis and inference, integrate multiple sources of information to solve the mystery (identify the victims of a plane crash, determine the perpetrator of an explosion onboard and determine if the crash was in fact the result of an act of terrorism)

  5. Roles Who will you be?

  6. Roles • Lead Investigator – Student is responsible for 3 calculations, identifying 2 victims, ensuring other team members complete tasks in a timely manner, that summary report meets project guidelines and final assembly of portfolio • All agents will work together to identify victims and write summary report.

  7. Roles • Investigator #1 – Student is responsible for 3 calculations, identifying 2 victims and writing background section of portfolio • All agents will work together to identify victims and write summary report.

  8. Roles • Investigator #2 - Student is responsible for 3 calculations, identifying 2 victims and assembling portfolio • All agents will work together to identify victims and write summary report.

  9. Roles • Probationary Agent – Student is responsible for 3 calculations, identifying 2 victims and creating graphical data section of portfolio • All agents will work together to identify victims and write summary report.

  10. Portfolio Requirements What your final submission will look like

  11. Portfolio Requirements • Must be typed • Must be submitted in a folder with prongs • Each section must have a title page/cover sheet • Must use proper grammar and professional language • Must include a dated signature from each team member, including their title

  12. Portfolio Requirements • Must include the following sections: • Background - a description of the situation, including relevant background information and team members names and titles • Analysis – each team member will show their calculations and resulting identification of the chemical residue

  13. Portfolio Requirements • Victim Identification – an identification of each victim, with a supporting paragraph for explaining the logic and citing evidence used to identify each victim

  14. Portfolio Requirements • Graphical Data – this section is open-ended, you must include at least 2 graphs, representing some portion of your original data, graphs should be created in Microsoft Excel and embedded into your Word document

  15. Portfolio Requirements • Summary Report – a description of the process your team followed, information regarding the original murder victim, what substance caused the plan to crash and who perpetrated this crime; in addition, the Department of Homeland Security wants definitive evidence regarding if this crash was an act of terrorism. You must support your conclusion with evidence gathered from the crime scene.

  16. Portfolio Requirements • Supporting Documents – Each team member will include their calculations in their own neat handwriting , any scratch work showing how victims were identified, etc… (no points will be lost in this section for it not being typed)

  17. Alternative assignment For those with excessive absences

  18. Alternative assignment • Students with excessive absences or those who opt-out: • Complete an 11 page packet due Monday, April 21st, 2014 • Take a test on Monday, April 21st, 2014

  19. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.11-12.1 • Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence. • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.11-12.1.E Provide a concluding statement or section that follows from and supports the argument presented.
