  1. American popular music that originated in the rural regions of the Southern United States in the 1920s. ~~~~ It takes its root from the southeastern genre of American folk music & Western music.

  2. The term country music gained popularity in the 1940s. ~~~~~ Another term for it was hillbilly music.

  3. Country music was introduced to the world as a “southern phenomenon”. ~~~~ In the South, folk music was a combination of cultural strains, combining musical traditions of a variety of ethnic groups. An interesting fact or event that can be observed and studied and that is typically unusual or difficult to understand or explain fully. Old songs with no known composers

  4. Country music is the creation of European American and African-American influence. ~~~~ Blacks and whites in rural communities in the south often worked and played together.

  5. 6 Generations of Country Music

  6. First Generation (1920s) Atlanta, Georgia music scene played a major role in launching country’s earliest recording artist in the early 1920s. ~~~~ Many Appalachian people had come to the city to work in its cotton mills and brought their music with them.

  7. Second Generation (1930s-1940s) Western Swing (cowboy music) Hillbilly Boogie Bluegrass, Folk, and Gospel Honky Tonk

  8. Third Generation (1950s-1960s) During the mid 1950s a new style of country music became popular, eventually to be referred to as rockabilly. ~~~~~ Rockabilly was a mixture of rock-and-roll and hillbilly music.
