  4. … Big Deal! If we’re not careful we can make too much out of word studies and miss the import of the word as used in the overall text.

  5. Understanding/Explaining/Interpreting the Bible Biblical Hermeneutics

  6. Biblical Hermeneutics: Its History

  7. Micro Approach: 2 Peter 2:1 • Word*: “False teacher” – one who teaches falsely. • Verse: warning/illustration of false teachers. • Passage: God’s wrath on false teachers. • Conclusion: Anyone who teaches something I believe to be false = false teacher.

  8. Macro Approach: 2 Peter 2:1 • Theme/Purpose of letter: Be on guard against the error of wicked (unprincipled) men. 2 Pet. 3:17-18 • Character of these false teachers: fully illustrated. 2 Pet. 2:12-17 • Conclusion: Apply the character of these “false teachers to 2 Pet. 2:1

  9. BE CAREFUL! We can take words and passages and potentially be guilty of severing relationships among brethren – even though they love God with all their heart and are trying to understand and serve Him – through a system of hermeneutics.

  10. Summary • Hermeneutics to create the Bible: understanding precise words (or thoughts) can be difficult enough for translators. • Hermeneutics used to interpret the meaning of the Bible: to defend one’s belief.

  11. A system of biblical hermeneutics to authoritatively live according to the Bible Biblical authority
