SHAKING AND BAKING . You are camping at Deep Creek Lake in western Maryland. At night you spend hours in front of the fire watching the flames dance peacefully. Once the wood has been completely burned to ash, many people believe that the energy of the wood is destroyed. The energy has been

    1. Drill- 1. Complete Activity 2 # 4 and #5 in your packet “Shaking and Baking” You have 5 minutes. Homework- Study for Friday’s quiz. 2. Forms of energy review and reinforce worksheet

    3. Objective When you have completed this investigation, you should be able to use science skills and processes in order to model and explain energy transformations.

    4. Materials BBs Sand Calculator-based laboratory system with temperature probe Water 3 Plastic containers with lids clock or watch

    5. Activity 1: Pre-lab Procedures Take a container half filled with BBs. Shake the container vigorously 20 times. Identify the energy form and type used to move the BBs while shaking. Type: kinetic Form: mechanical

    6. Activity 2: Problem Question and Hypothesis What is the effect of the time of shaking on the temperature of a substance? Identify the independent and dependent variable in the problem question. Independent Variable: time of shaking Dependant variable: temperature

    7. 5. Develop a well-structured hypothesis for the problem question. If ________________________ , then _______________________ because ____________________.

    8. Activity 3 Heat is a form of energy that is not always obvious to us. We can measure even small changes in temperature using the CBL temperature probe.

    9. 1. Read the procedures for the investigation. Setting Up the CBL 1 Plug the temperature probe into the Ch 1 port of the CBL. Press the ON key. Press the mode key until the °C symbol appears. The CBL will take readings and display them every second.

    10. Collecting Data Obtain the plastic container half full of BBs used in Activity 1. Place the temperature probe into the container of BBs and wait 30 seconds. Record the starting temperature in your chart once the reading remains constant for 20 seconds. Remove the probe from the container and put the lid on tightly. Predict the temperature of the BBs after shaking for 30 seconds. Record your prediction in your chart. Shake the container vigorously for 30 seconds. Open the container and quickly place the temperature probe inside. Record the temperature in your chart after the temperature reading remains constant. Repeat steps H-K shaking the container for 60 seconds Repeat steps H-K shaking the container for 90 seconds. Repeat steps D-M using sand. Repeat steps D-M using water.

    11. Exit Ticket 4. Describe the relationship between the time of shaking and the temperature using the results from the data chart..

    12. Day 2- Shaking and baking Drill- Think about what we learned in yesterday’s lab. What was the relationship between the shaking time and the temperature of the substances. Homework- Study for Friday’s quiz. Finish Analysis Questions.

    13. 5. Write a conclusion for the investigation. The conclusion should include a statement of the problem question the hypothesis proposed (“because…” not included) a statement accepting or rejecting the hypothesis the results of the investigation an explanation of the results a concluding statement answering the problem question no personal pronouns

    14. The problem in this investigation was “What is the effect of the time of shaking on the temperature of a substance?”

    15. Analysis Questions 1. Complete the sequence chain to show the energy transformation that occurs when your arm is used to shake the BBs.

    16. The law of conservation of energy states that energy is neither created nor destroyed. Energy is constantly being changed from one form to another.

    17. Identify and explain the energy transformations that took place as a result of the BBs being shaken using the graphic organizer from number 1. Explain why the temperature of the BBs increased. Justify why the change in temperature occurred using the information that you have learned in this investigation.
