MD adopts Common Core State Standards Workforce shortage reports PISA White House publishes 5-Year STEM Plan 2003 2011 2009 2005 2007 2013 MD adopts Next Generation Science Standards “STEM” acronym coined; no one knows what it means, but it’s better than its predecessor, “SMET” $TEM Mania! ~$3+B investment across federal government annually National Governor’s Association assumes national leadership role in STEM

How are we doing internationally? • Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2011 shows upward trend • Performing slightly above the international average, instead of below • But … 19 percent of eighth graders in Massachusetts, the highest-performing state, scored as advanced on the math exams, = 50% of students in South Korea, Singapore and Taiwan • PISA results published early December
