  2. SAFETY • 1ST and ULTIMATE rule of Firearm. • In a home where firearms are kept, the responsibility of educating children in firearms safety is Yours! • A parents responsibility does not end when children leave the house

  3. TALKING with your Children • There is no specific age to talk to a child about firearm safety. • Talking openly & honestly about firearms • safety is more effective then telling them to go away or stay out of the drawer with the gun in it.   4. STOP !! DON’T TOUCH !! Leave the area Tell an adult • STOP ! DON’T TOUCH are the most important initial steps to teach a child if a firearm is found. • LEAVE THE AREA is also essential,even if the AREA is a room. • Tell an adult emphasizes that the child notify a trustworthy adult or even calling 911

Mass.Firearms Laws • Licensing: FID (Min) requirement for a non large capacity rifle or shotgun in the home • Handguns require either a LTC or an FID with a permit to purchase for that firearm • Newly purchased firearms MUST be equipped with a trigger lock supplied by the seller.   6. FIREARMS SAFETY RULES • 1-Always keep firearm pointed in a safe direction • 2-Always keep finger off the trigger until ready to shoot • 3-Always keep the gun unloaded and locked / secured • 4- Know your target AND what is beyond it.

  7. FIREARMS SAFETY RULES • 5-Know how to use the gun safely • 6-Be sure the gun is safe to operate • 7-Use only the correct ammunition • 8-Wear Eye & Ear protection • 9-NEVER use alcohol or drugs(prescription or otherwise) before or after shooting

  9. FIREARMS IN MOTOR VEHICLES • Can a pistol be kept locked in a car ? • YES - BUT • Must have either an LTC A OR B AND the pistol must be unloaded and locked in a secure container in the trunk ( ONLY) FOR MORE INFO... Mass.General Law C 140 S 131 C & 131 L

  10. MASS. FIREARMS LAW UPDATES • 1-1st time conviction of DUI disqualifies applicant for license ( 2.5 year jail sentence ) If continued without a finding then for LTC purposes this is not a conviction

  11. MASS FIREARMS LAW UPDATES (Continued) • 2-Restraining Orders. • If a restraining order is filed against an LTC holder..they must immediately turn them in to the local police. You CANNOT transfer them to another LTC holder • There is an exception for sworn law enforcement officers.
