  1. The 3D Printer Jacob Applewhite Michael Gillespie PLTW 1B/2B

  2. The Inventor • Charles Hull invented the 3 dimensional printer in 1984. • He was born in May 12, 1939. • He is the founder of 3D Systems, INC

  3. Purpose • Hull said that designing a permanent plastic mold took too long. • Took 6-8 weeks to get a first article mold. • If done wrong, process had to be repeated • With a 3D printer mistakes are able to be edited

  4. Original Parts • Metals (steel) • Plastics • Circuitry • Nylon • Rotating motor • Timing belt • Wood Original Current

  5. How It Was Made • Lasers guided printing • Gears turned the wheels • A belt held the printer head in place • Worked on a track system • Heating element melted the printing material

  6. Improvements The First 3D Printer • First printer had to be connected by cables • It now can be connected wirelessly • First used sand with a spray on coating • Then they used wax • Now they use..

  7. Improvements (cont.) • Why improvements were made • Ease of use • Durability • Cost effectiveness

  8. Users • Designers • Student • Crafters • Engineers

  9. Global Impact • Improved manufacturing • Allowed parts to be quickly replaced when broken • Helped lessen the cost of products (ie cars) • Designers could help company better visualize ideas • Advanced technology globally

  10. What We Would Change • The ability to print in more colors • The Cost • The availability

  11. Time Line The first 3D printer was invented The First Bio-printed kidney functions A 3D printer first prints its own replacement part A 3D printer prints another 3D printer First 3D printed prosthetic First 3D sold for home use Blood vessel printed First printed RC airplane First car prototype printed Gold and silver printing compounds Bio-printed Jaw bone is implanted in 83 year old woman

  12. Important Engineer Fields For Product • Medical Provide knowledge on prosthetics and tissue printed • Manufacturing Used and tested the prototype and assisted in development • Electrical Helped build the circuitry in printer • Material Engineered materials that would work in printer

  13. Patents • Dual stage 3D printer • Apparatus for production of three-dimensional objects by stereolithography • Rapid prototype three dimensional stereolithography • Improvements for 3d design and manufacturing systems
