  2. Objectives: - To assess the natural factors and human actions influencing biodiversity. - To understand the value of ecosystems.. - To evaluate the arguments for and against the development of the ANWR (Arctic National Wildlife Refuge) Starter Graphs bottom pg. 100 A2 book What do these graphs show? What factors or processes do you think influence biodiversity?

  3. Objectives: - To assess the natural factors and human actions influencing biodiversity. - To understand the value of ecosystems.. - To evaluate the arguments for and against the development of the ANWR (Arctic National Wildlife Refuge)

  4. Objectives: - To assess the natural factors and human actions influencing biodiversity. - To understand the value of ecosystems.. - To evaluate the arguments for and against the development of the ANWR (Arctic National Wildlife Refuge)

  5. Objectives: - To assess the natural factors and human actions influencing biodiversity. - To understand the value of ecosystems.. - To evaluate the arguments for and against the development of the ANWR (Arctic National Wildlife Refuge)

  6. Objectives: - To assess the natural factors and human actions influencing biodiversity. - To understand the value of ecosystems.. - To evaluate the arguments for and against the development of the ANWR (Arctic National Wildlife Refuge) TASK Using R/S ‘The Value of Coral Reefs,’ produce a detailed spider diagram/mind map describing the different ways in which coral reefs are of value. Extension:visit www.wri.org/project/coral-reef to investigate further the value of coral reefs.

  7. Objectives: - To assess the natural factors and human actions influencing biodiversity. - To understand the value of ecosystems.. - To evaluate the arguments for and against the development of the ANWR (Arctic National Wildlife Refuge) • 1] Teacher led notes on the following: • Processes and factors influencing biodiversity; • The value of ecosystems, eg. coral reefs. 2] Student Activities focussed on ‘The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) – a tundra ecosystem under threat.’ Read pg.’s 94 to 99 in the A2 textbook and complete the following activities: 1. Describe the characteristics of the ANWR in terms of its: - climate, - vegetation, - soils, & - animals.

  8. Objectives: - To be aware of the different ways of defining biodiversity. - To understand the processes and factors influencing biodiversity. - To describe and explain the distribution of biodiversity hotspots. • What is primary productivity? • Prudhoe Bay is on the northern coast of Alaska to the west of the ANWR. What is happening to the oil reserves in this area? Why does the USA want oil from the ANWR? • What is meant by the term playersin terms of the development of the ANWR? • Produce a spider diagram detailing the viewpoints of the different players involved in the proposed development of the ANWR. Identify those players in favour of the development of the ANWR and those that are not. • Complete Qu. 2 (pg. 99). Ensure your table is detailed and A4 sized! • What is being done to protect the ANWR? • What is President Barack Obama expected to do to protect the ANWR?

  9. Objectives: - To assess the natural factors and human actions influencing biodiversity. - To understand the value of ecosystems.. - To evaluate the arguments for and against the development of the ANWR (Arctic National Wildlife Refuge) VIDEO EXERCISE Watch the BBC documentary ‘The State of the Planet – Is there a Crisis?’Take notes on the scientific evidence that suggests that many of the world’s ecosystems are in crisis. http://www.youtube.com/user/MartianSanta

  10. Objectives: - To assess the natural factors and human actions influencing biodiversity. - To understand the value of ecosystems.. - To evaluate the arguments for and against the development of the ANWR (Arctic National Wildlife Refuge) ASSIGNMENT Research ONE of the six biodiversity hotspots identified on your world maps. Describe the nature of the ecosystem and explain the threats affecting it. [Submit: Monday th June 2011]

  11. Objectives: - To assess the natural factors and human actions influencing biodiversity. - To understand the value of ecosystems.. - To evaluate the arguments for and against the development of the ANWR (Arctic National Wildlife Refuge) Plenary Divide into TWO groups. One group should take the role of the Inupiat people of North Alaska, and the other group the Gwich’in. Debate the arguments for and against development of the Coastal Plain for oil.
