  2. Vocab: Context 3-20 • Explain the meaning of the word context in each of the following sentences. • A. Use context clues to understand an unknown word. • B. The context for The Westing Game is the 1970s.

  3. Context • A. Refers to the material (text) surrounding a word. • B. The social or cultural situation in which the text is set, e.g., medieval times; Civil Rights Movement; natural disasters

  4. Vocab: Generalize 3-18 • The word generalizein the following sentence means: • A)central idea • B)an understanding using facts • C)a concept • D)a prediction We can generalize that the MSP results are important.

  5. Generalize • Taking what is known, and using the facts to make an inference which leads to an understanding. What is known: Student schedules are developed based on MSP Inference: MSP gives important information. Understanding: MSP results are important.

  6. Vocab: Propaganda 3-14 • The following statement is considered propaganda. Explain why. • China’s government controls everything in the country so that everyone will be treated equally.

  7. Propaganda • Written or oral presentation intended to persuade to a particular idea usually by misrepresenting data or exaggerating the facts. • China’s government controls everything in the country so that everyone will be treated equally.

  8. Vocab: Dialog (Dialogue) 3-13 • What is the purpose of dialog (dialogue) in fictional text? • Provide an example of its purpose.

  9. Dialog (dialogue) • Definition: a conversational passage by character(s) • Purpose: used to develop a character through indirect characterization or used to advance the plot.

  10. Vocab: Point of View 3-12 • What is the difference between the term ‘point of view’ used with literature and ‘point of view’ used with the word opinion?

  11. Point of View-literature • The perspective from which a story is told. The three perspectives are first person, third person and omniscient.

  12. Vocab: Antonym 3-11 • Write two antonyms for the following word: • dishonesty

  13. Antonym • A word that means the opposite of the word given. • Examples: light/dark; adult/child

  14. Vocab: Synonym 3-8 • Look at the following words: • Yarn, myth, parable Provide a synonym for each of the words.

  15. Synonym • A word having a similar meaning to another word. It is spelled differently.

  16. Vocab: Electronic Sources 3-8 • The principal mode of electronic sources for gathering information is ________________?

  17. Electronic Sources • Digital resources for gathering information. The principal mode is the Internet. Other modes: CD roms, television, iPad, iPhone (androids)

  18. Vocab: Prefix & Suffix • Look at the word reprint. Identify the prefix and explain what it does to the root word. • Look at the word oxen. Identify the suffix and explain what it does to the root word.

  19. Prefix • An affix attached before a base word or root which slightly alters the meaning of the original word.

  20. Suffix • An affix attached to the end of a base or root word that changes the meaning or grammatical function of the word.

  21. Vocab: Setting 3-5 • “Michael was trying hard to stop the arguing between his brother and the large man. The day was cold for September and the street corner deserted.” • Explain the elements of setting in the passage.

  22. Setting • The time, location and circumstance of a narrative (text).

  23. Vocab: Summarize March 4 • Find the phrase that best describes the purpose of the word summarize. • A. To paraphrase the text and/or information • B. To give a sequential retell of the information in the text. • C. To present the essential parts of the fictional text in a condensed form to show how the plot moves forward. • D. An outline of the major events.

  24. Summarize • To determine what is important in the fictional text to moving the plot forward, condense the information, and put it into your own words.
