Modal Auxiliary would can be used in sentences with several different uses To Express assumption or probability • (There is a door bell) That would be the postman, I guess. • (A customer mentions the things he wants to buy to the shopkeeper) That would be all, I think. • (I am waiting for a phone call. There is a phone call at the moment) That would be the call I am waiting for. I am sure of it!

  3. To Indicate a polite request or invitation • (A host offers a guest) Would you like to have something to drink? • (A boy persuades his girlfriend) Would you forgive me please? • (A mother ask her son’s help) Would you mind going to the supermarket to get some milk?

  4. To indicate the past aspect of will • When he was young, he would not spend his time doing nothing. But now as he grows older, he will only let the time pass. • I would wait for my mom when she left home to go somewhere.

  5. To indicate a strong desire, when the modal is used after the word wish • I wish you would be here on time. • I wish you would not spend your money carelessly
