  1. Why do female artists feel they need to sex themselves up to be Successful?

  2. The Idea • The Idea for my Graded unit is ‘‘Why do FEMALE artists feel the need to sex themselves up to be successful’’ , I think this would be a good idea as I can compare certain artists and there success for example Taylor Swift and MileyCyrus and looking into their differences because miley has sexed herself up a lot for attention and Taylor has kept her class, I would also look into the effect media has on this and if stars change themselves to appeal to a wider range of audiences or to get attention from the media. And if they feel it is essential to make a change in their appearance (dancing in underwear etc,) For attention. And whether they are seen in a positive or negative way in the media because of this. My angle would be why they want to do this and whether they actually do it for themselves or to get attention from the media, I would also want to look into the fact that is mainly female artists who feel the need to sex themselves up and the reason behind that.

  3. Why I chose this idea • I chose this is as my idea because after seeing Miley Cyrus’s VMA performance I noticed that she was pretty much naked and Robin Thicke was wearing a suit why weren’t the men naked too so why do female artists feel the need to do this, I then seen Taylor Swifts Grammy performance where she was wearing a long dress and covered up and she is equally as successful as Miley Cyrus so I want to find out why some artists feel they have to dance inappropriately or under dress themselves for attention.

  4. Target Audience And Radio Station • The chosen radio station for my graded unit package is radio one I have chose radio one as I feel this is a topic which would interest a younger audience as I will be looking at celebrities who they are interested in like miley Cyrus, The target age group for this would be 15-29 year olds because that is the main age group that listen to radio one and the ages that would most likely find this topic interesting. It will be broadcast around 7pm because it’s a documentary style programme and that is mainly the time they are on after the rush hour listeners etc,

  5. Guest Ideas • I would do some vox pops asking the public which celebrity they would respect more and prefer to be like if in their position e.gtaylor swift//mileycyrus. I could interview a journalist or some person who works for a magazine to see how they think the media effects this and who they would rather be writing about or if the medias criticism has anything to do with the changes we have seen some celebrities make, Could also interview maybe a feminist to get there views on celebrity women being made to have the sex appeal to attract attention. (not sure who the final guest would be yet. And a mental health expert to see if the reason celebrities feel they have to do this is mental or for media.

  6. Style Of Package • The style of my package will be presenter I feel like the whole package will have more of a flow and structure to it if it is presenter led. • I also want it to have an upbeat feel to it so it appeals more to a younger audience and because its on radio one. But at the same time keeping it serious and dealing with the seriouser sexist side. • I want my package to be entertaining but also for the listener to take some information about why singers do this.

  7. Magazine show • My package will fit in with our groups chosen topic of music//Media as Im basing my package around musisians and the stress that the media can put on them.

  8. Research . Artists have different opinions on how they should act for example in an interview with Glamour Taylor Swift said ‘I find it relatively easy to keep my clothes on because I don’t really feel like taking them off. It’s not an urge I have.” and “For me ‘risky’ is revealing what really happened in my life through music. Risky is writing confessional songs and telling the true story about a person with enough details so everyone knows who that person is. That’s putting myself out there, maybe even more than taking my shirt off.” she also says she doesn’t read what the media write about her so that links in with the media involvement in the way artists act. Where as Miley Cyrus said "How many times have we seen this play out in pop music?" Cyrus asked. "Madonna's done it, Britney's done it. Every VMA performance. Anyone that performs, that's what you're looking for. You are wanting to make history.“

  9. More research • There is an on going argument over whether ‘sex sells’ • Music’s beauty is in the ear of the beholder - not in the sex appeal of the musician • The selling point for classical music performers should be their talent, not their looks or youthfulness –the telegraph • One of the main points is the sexualisation of women - a tired point, admittedly, but not unimportant. Think Katy Perry and think of cupcake bras, think Rihanna and think of Instagram bikini photos and THAT S&M video. Aside from those obvious points, there's a myriad of subtler issues surrounding this. Maria Diamandis, for example, who had her video for 'How to Be a Heartbreaker' pushed back in September because she looked 'ugly'. • It is said that the music industry chews up women and spits them out because when they are unattractive they normally aren’t as successful.

  10. Where I can find research • Google • magazines • Celebrity interviews • Youtube

  11. Music • The music I will use for my package will be something modern and because I’m going to talk about Miley Cyrus I might play something like wrecking ball or adore you. I will also look at other music in the charts at the time. Might possibly play blurred lines because it was considered sexist because the females were naked and men were in suits.
