  1. Mrs. McCullar’s Classroom News hmccullar@lcps.k12.nm.us 527-9490 http://mveshmccullar.weebly.com/ August 25, 2014 • If you’re student normally rides the bus, but will be picked up by a parent one day, I WILL need a note or a phone call to the office on that day! And vice versa for kids who usually get picked up. I will also need a note stating that they need to ride the bus. • A big thank you to all of the parents who have helped students get their school supplies right away! You don’t know how much this helps in getting classwork started right away! • If you still haven’t gotten supplies, a list has been sent home with each student. My list differs from the district’s, so double-check to see if you’ve missed anything. Reading-We have been practicing our reading stamina while reading alone and while reading with a partner. This wonderful group of kids are already reading up to 25 minutes without stopping! Ask your student what they need to be doing the whole time during Read to Self. Mrs. McCullar is assessing students and will soon start Guided Reading groups based on students’ needs. Math-We have already begun learning about Operations (+, -, *, and /), when to know when to use each one, and also how they all relate to one another (multiplication facts can help you with division). Ask your student to draw an array for “3 groups of 9.” Ask them to write an equation for this statement:”72 is 9 times as many as 8.” Writing-We are writing Narratives (short stories) this first nine weeks, and the students have already written one which Mrs. McCullar will assess in order to see what needs to be taught during our Writing Workshop. Students have also started planning and writing the first paragraph of a narrative which will be graded. • Open House for 4th grade is August 28th from 6-6:30. We’ll be discussing expectations, safety, and what the class has been working on so far. You’ll also be signing up for the first Parent-Teacher Conference in September, and for my mass-texting service. • No school on Monday, September 1st for Labor Day • No school on September 18th and 19th for Staff Development
