  2. Defense Mechanisms • Ways in which a person copes with a situation • Should be cautious; can be unhealthy

  3. Rationalization • Involves using an excuse for behavior in order to avoid a true motive

  4. Projection • Putting the blame on someone else or something else

  5. Displacement • Involves transferring feelings about 1 person to someone else • Usually occurs because a person cannot direct the feelings toward the responsible person

  6. Compensation • Involves substituting 1 goal for another • May result in success or failure

  7. Suppression • Aware of a thought or feeling but try to hide it • Trying to “forget” something that causes anxiety

  8. Repression • Involves the transfer of unacceptable or painful ideas, feelings, and thoughts into the unconscious mind • Emotions become too painful • Person “forgets” • Will resurface

  9. Denial • Involves disbelief of an event that is too frightening or shocking • Person is unable to cope

  10. Withdrawal • Avoids people and communicates very little • Avoids “norm” for their life

  11. Regression • Reverting to an old, immature behavior • A return to an earlier stage of development in the face of unacceptable events
