  2. Early life • James "Jim" Bowie (April 10, 1796 – March 6, 1836) Jim Bowie was born near Spring Creek, Kentucky on April 10, 1796. He had about 10 brothers and sisters, Brothers : John Jones Bowie, Rezin Pleasant Bowie, David Bowie, Stephen Bowie. - Sisters : Sarah Bowie Davis, Mary Bowie Bird, Martha Bowie Sterrett. They Were educated at home, and learned to read and write in English. While still very young, he moved with his family, first to Missouri, then in 1802 to Louisiana, where he spent most of his youth. It was there that he first acquired a reputation for his bold and fearless disposition.

  3. adulthood • Jim Bowie moved to Texas in 1828 seeking a land grant from the Mexicans. Known for his famous "Bowie knife" and a sometimes reckless adventurer, Jim Bowie is now immortalized as one of the true folk heroes in early Texas.

  4. DIED DEFENDING THE ALAMO IN MARCH 1836 • On March 6, 1836, the Mexicans attacked before dawn, and all 188 defenders of the Alamo perished. Santa Anna asked to see the corpses of Bowie, Travis, and Crockett, and Bexar, mayor Francisco Ruiz identified the bodies. Bowie lay on his cot in a room on the south side. He had been shot several times in the head.
