  1. COMING SOON… You have a mini exam coming up soon... This will allow me to see how well you have taken on board the information and content of this unit as well as assessing your exam technique. Use your REVISION GUIDE to REVISE this unit CRIME AND PUNISHMENT to prepare for this exam.

  2. OBJECTIVE… To use media clips, the law, and picture clues to understand Christian attitudes to drugs and alcohol.

  3. OUTCOMES… Grade C All will be able to describe Christian attitudes to illegal drugs. Grade B Most will be able to explain different Christian attitudes to alcohol. Grade A/A* Some will be able to express an opinion on Christian attitudes to drugs and alcohol. Your GOALS for the end of this lesson are…

  4. Starter… Everywhere that sells alcohol has to have a licence granted by their Local Authority.. For class A drugs you can receive up to 7 years in prison for possession and life for dealing. It is an offence for anyone to buy, or try to buy alcohol on behalf of a child. Children under the age of 16 are not allowed in a pub or bar without adult supervision. Why do we have laws dealing with drugs and alcohol? Do you think UK laws protect people in the UK from the dangers of drugs and alcohol? For class C drugs you can receive up to 2 years in prison for possession and 14 for dealing. Some drugs are legal but must be sold under controlled conditions in pharmacies, supermarkets and shops. It is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to buy, or try to buy alcohol. Children age 16-17 are allowed to drink alcohol in a pub in the company of someone over 18 and only when having a table meal. For class B drugs you can receive up to 5 years in prison for dealing and 15 for possession.

  5. Christian attitudes to illegal drugs… Listen out for what is said about alcohol BUT DON’T note this down just yet! Watch the following video carefully… Make NOTES on your sheet in the 5 areas to DESCRIBE why Christians are AGAINST the use of illegal drugs. The vast majority of Christians believe that taking any kind of drug excessively is WRONG because it damages the body which God created. All Christians in the UK believe that taking illegal drugs is wrong.

  6. The Bible teaches that Christians should obey the law of the land, which includes the law on drugs. Our body is a gift from God and we should not abuse or misuse it – drugs harm the body and that which God has created. Many drug users turn to crime to fund their habit, this leads to sin and goes against the teaching of Christianity. Drug abuse can break down marriages and family relationships and can make people anti-social. Illegal drugs have a powerful effect on people’s behaviour and can make them behave badly or act in ways Christians should not. Which of these reasons (if any) do you agree with and why?

  7. OUTCOMES… Did you achieve YOUR goals?… • Grade C • All will be able to describe Christian attitudes to illegal drugs.

  8. Unlike illegal drugs, alcohol and tobacco are not ‘forbidden’ in Christianity. SOME Christians therefore choose to drink and/or smoke. MOST Christians would choose NOT to smoke as even a small amount is harmful to the body. HOWEVER there are more mixed opinions when it comes to alcohol.

  9. http://www.truetube.co.uk/body-and-health/addiction/cause--effecthttp://www.truetube.co.uk/body-and-health/addiction/cause--effect Watch the following clip and try to give 2 arguments FOR the consumption of alcohol and 2 arguments AGAINST. Look out for the odd religious argument! Before we look at Christian teachings relating to the consumption of alcohol lets have a look at some arguments in general.

  10. It leads to promiscuity and unwanted pregnancies. • It is a depressant. • It makes people do things they wouldn’t usually do. • It causes relationship problems • It can cause crime. • It causes people to behave in an immoral way. • People can become addicted – alcoholism. • Jesus used it at the LAST SUPPER • It can be used for medicinal purposes. • In the past it was used as an anti-depressant. • It gives people confidence. • It inspires people to be creative. • It makes people do things they wouldn’t usually do.

  11. Christian attitudes to alcohol… So what does CHRISTIANITY teach about the consumption of alcohol?

  12. Reasons for drinking alcohol in moderation...… MANY Christians DO choose to drink alcohol in SMALL AMOUNTS because... Watch the following picture clues to EXPLAIN WHY.

  13. During the LAST SUPPER, Jesus gave his disciples wine during the first HOLY COMMUNION or EUCHARIST.

  14. Jesus himself drank wine and even preformed a miracle at a wedding turning water into wine.

  15. The Bible does not forbid the drinking of alcohol.

  16. Most Christian churches, such as Roman Catholics and Church of England, do not forbid the drinking of alcohol and use wine during holy communion.

  17. Christian attitudes to alcohol… None of the Christian teachings suggest that drinking alcohol is SINFUL. However there are many teachings that warn against drinking too much because… ‘Getting drunk on wine leads to bad behaviour’ (Ephesians 5:18) What is the meaning of this quote? What does it mean by BAD BEHAVIOUR? So Christians who do drink should do so in MODERATION.

  18. Christian attitudes to alcohol… There are SOME Christians who choose NOT to drink alcohol AT ALL (e.g. The Salvation Army). These Christians DO NOT believe drinking alcohol is SINFUL but that it is simple best to AVOID it. Use the picture clues to complete your sheet EXPLAINING WHY.

  19. Drinking alcohol can impair a person’s judgments and reduce their ability to act in a Christian way.

  20. People drank wine in biblical times because there was little else for them to drink – as there are lots of other types of drink available now there is no need for alcohol.

  21. Drinking can cause you to offend others so it is better to not drink.

  22. In biblical times people drank wine or ale only; today alcohol is much stronger and therefore more dangerous to a persons health and society.

  23. OUTCOMES… Did you achieve YOUR goals?… • Grade B • Most will be able to explain different Christian attitudes to alcohol.

  24. Although it is VERY RARE, there are a few Christians who believe alcohol should be made illegal such as AMERICAN BAPTISTS. Their view is alcohol is EVIL and should be banned completely.

  25. http://www.truetube.co.uk/body-and-health/addiction/alcohol-is-like-heroinhttp://www.truetube.co.uk/body-and-health/addiction/alcohol-is-like-heroin Do you think alcohol should be made illegal? Do you agree with the Christian view of drinking in moderation? Are there any problems with this idea? Do you think alcohol should be made illegal? Do you agree with the Christian view of drinking in moderation? Are there any problems with this idea?

  26. OUTCOMES… • Grade A/A* • Some will be able to express an opinion on Christian attitudes to drugs and alcohol. Did you achieve YOUR goals?…

  27. Plenary … Draw a pyramid in the back of your books and spit it into 3... Think of a question you would like answering. What have you been reminded of today? What have you learnt today?

  28. Plenary … Match the Christian teaching to the Biblical quote… “Your body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit , who lives in you and was given to you by God” A little bit of alcohol is ok and can have benefits to your health. “Do not get drunk with wine, which will ruin you, but instead be filled with the Holy Spirit” Drugs can take over people’s lives and control them. “Do not drink water only but take a little wine to help your digestion, since you are ill so often” Your body is God’s temple so you should not harm it as it would be disrespectful to God. “Drug abuse is the new slavery” Pope John Paul II Focus yourself on your religion rather than alcohol which can harm you.
