  3. How do phonics sessions run? • Daily sessions • 30 minutes Follow the same format: • Recap and reinforce • Introduction of new sound and consolidation • Practice focusing on reading words, writing words or handwriting (letter formation)

  4. Supporting Reading and Writing • Word time, key words and the ditties • Games/Activities to try at home • Bingo • Shopping lists • Word building • Magnetic letters • Missing letter game • CbeebiesAlphablocks • Phonics Play website • Teach your monster to read (app)

  5. Stages of Writing Random scribbling Controlled scribbling Lines and patterns Letter strings Initial sounds Initial and final sound Hears the middle sound Phrase writing

  6. Reading at School • Shared reading - whole class - demonstration • Guided Reading - groups - applying taught skills - comprehension • Independent Reading

  7. Ways to develop the children’s understanding and confidence • Before reading: - look at the cover - talk about what might happen • During reading: - encourage the children to identify the initial sound - question their understanding - use the pictures to prompt • After reading: - talk about what happened and why

  8. Homework Menu • 12/15 activities covering all areas of the curriculum • Mix of activity types - writing based - art based - investigation and exploration • Complete as many as your child is happy with - each activity has a points value
