  1. Curriculum, Assessment, and Gifted and Talented Overview Opening Day August 1, 2012

  2. Curriculum Update

  3. Curriculum for 2012-2013 • English/Language Arts = Kentucky Core Academic Standards (KCAS) • Math = Kentucky Core Academic Standards (KCAS) • Science = CC 4.1 + KCAS Literacy Standards • The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) will be released in December 2012. Students will be assessed on the new standards in the Spring of 2014. • Social Studies = CC 4.1 + KCAS Literacy Standards

  4. Update on Science Standards • A group of 20 states were selected to lead an important effort to improve science education for all students. The 20 states will lead the development of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS),a state-led effort that will clearly define the content and practices all students will need to learn from kindergarten through high school graduation. • In July 2011, the National Research Council released A Framework for K-12 Science Education, developed by a committee representing expertise in science, teaching and learning, curriculum, assessment and education policy. • The Partners used the framework to guide the standards writing process, gather and deliver feedback from state-level committees in order to address common issues and challenges. • The draft standards were released in May. The science standards are currently under revision. • The NGSS should be completed by the end of 2012. Environmental literacy is part of the discussion around the Next Generation Science Standards. • The Kentucky Environmental Literacy Plan (KELP) has been created to ensure that graduates of Kentucky’s P‐12 education system will be environmentally literate.

  32. Aligned, high-quality assessments that measure student growth

  33. Calculation Process Individual student data collected from the assessments and rates (readiness and graduation) are used to generate a numeric value for each category. The value of each category is weighted to create a final overall score for Next-Generation Learners.

  34. Kentucky High School Sample

  37. State-developed Differentiated Recognition, Accountability and Support • Reward schools: Provide incentive and recognition for high-progress and highest performing Title I schools • Priority schools: Identify lowest-performing schools and implement interventions aligned with the turnaround principles • Focus schools: Close achievement gaps by identifying and implementing interventions in schools with the greatest achievement gaps or low graduation rates • Provide incentives and supports for other Title I schools • Build state, district and school capacity to improve student learning in all schools

  38. Program Reviews • Program Reviews were required to be submitted by each school this past June. • Program Reviews will NOT be part of accountability for the scores that will be reported in October 2012. • Program Reviews will be part of accountability for 2012-2013. (23%)
