  3. Fornegationsandquestionsweusethepast form ofdoandtheinfinitive: + I workedthere. - I didn’tworkthere. ? Didhe workthere? ? - Didn’ttheyworkthere?

  4. Was sheat the party? ForthePast Simpleshortanswersareformedasfollows: Didtheyworkhere? + Yes, she was. + Yes, they did. - No, they didn’t. - No, she wasn’t. Did you see Tim today? Were they here? + Yes, I did. + Yes, they were. - No, I didn’t. - No, they weren’t.

  5. 2. Spelling: Iftheinfinitiveends in a silent-e, we just add-d: love → he loved move →shemoved Iftheinfinitiveends in a consonant + y, theendingis-ied: try →shetried cry → shecried BUT: play → sheplayed

  6. If the infinitive ends in a stressed consonant + vowel + consonant (CVC) combination, we double the last consonant: stop→stopped BUT: remember→remembered

  8. 3. Use: The Past Simple isusedfora) simple (einmalige) actions, forb) consecutive(aufeinanderfolgende) actions, c) for repetitive (sich wiederholende) actionsthatstartedandended in thepast: a) Theymovedin last week. b) He openedhisbookandbegantoread. c) He wroteher a lettereveryweek.

  9. Notice the time expressions that are used with the Past Simple: I didit… … last week /month / … five years / a week /... ago. … yesterday /... … in 1961.

  10. Ex.: Translate! • Es war kalt draussen, also habe ich mir einen Mantel angezogen. Itwascold outside, so I puton a coat. • Wir sind letztes Jahr nach Kanada gereist.
