Sustainability- a long tradition • Responsible utilisation of resources • Sparing with the resources for manufacturing our high-quality cartonboard and folding cartons • Primarily processing renewable materials • Application of high-performance technology • Harmony between economic and ecological responsibility • Best possible standards • Establishment of best possible standards • Approaching our social responsibility in a integrative way • Ethically respectful principles of action • Transact our business as “honourable businessmen” • Ethical principles • Sustainability as management task • Implementation of our sustainability strategy and evaluation of the appropriateness of the corresponding measures • Principle of subsidiarity

  25. Products We develop and sell functional, attractive and at the same time environmentally low-impact cartonboard and packaging solutions of high quality. Customer orientation With the objective of maintaining long-term and partner-like co-operation, we follow the principle of the highest level of professionalism in our customer relations. Employees We continue to develop the technical and personal skills of our employees, and we are committed to the principles of plurality and equality of opportunity. Environmental protection We pursue an integrated approach in the protection of our environment and implement it through ongoing optimisation of all environmentally relevant aspects and interests. Objectives of sustainability Future-oriented objectives The corporate culture of the Mayr-Melnhof Group has always been characterized by responsible action. The enterprise has committed itself to the following sustainable objectives.

  26. Fibre We use about 1.6 million tons of fibre raw materials per year for cartonboard production. Approximately 80% of this material consists of recovered paper, and 20% of virgin fibres that are obtained from sustainably cultivated and controlled forests. Water By means of recycling systems, and through increases in the efficiency of the production processes, the total consumption of water is continuously reduced. Energy We mainly utilise natural gas as a primary source of energy. Plants for the co-generation of heat and power in our cartonboard mills are highly efficient in producing steam and electricity for cartonboard production, through the use of natural gas. Sustainable Resource management Besides the product-technical and economic advantages, the utilisation of cartonboard in the world of packaging also represents the most sustainable packaging solution from an ecological point of view. It is based on the utilisation of renewable resources, showing the highest recycling rate and absolutely lowest CO2- emission values, throughout the entire value-added chain.

  27. Sustainable resource management Cartonboard Lifecycle

  28. Industry Carbon Figures by Pro Carton CO2, stocked in the forest in roots and trunks is at least neutral but some studies show the uptake to be higher Carbon stored in cartonboard products 1.474 kg/tons Fossile CO2-emissions from cartonboard produced and converted 964 kg/tons Climate protection A positive balance for the enivronment The Pro Carton Calculation Method of the Carbon Footprint: Binding for the Mayr-Melnhof Group The Mayr-Melnhof Group is committed to observing the strict and scientifically founded guidelines of the Pro Carton standard, which has developed a joint and uniform approach for the calculation of the carbon footprint, together with other paper, cartonboard and packaging manufacturers.
