  6. Symbol • Person place or thing that stands for something beyond itself.

  7. Figurative Language • Beyond the literal meaning

  8. Simile • Comparison using like or as Fast as Lightning

  9. Metaphor • Comparison not using like or as Look Mom! No Hands Mike Jordan floats like air

  10. Personification • Giving living characteristics to inanimate objects “The smiling sun brightened my day”

  11. Hyperbole • Exaggeration used to emphasize a point

  12. Tragedy • A story that begins calm and ends in catastrophe

  13. Fiction • A story based on non-fact

  14. Anecdote • A brief or amusing story

  15. Statistic • Numerical fact

  16. Comparison • Resemblance between two works

  17. Description • Writing that creates a picture or scene

  18. Quotation • Giving credit for work cited “I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can't accept not trying”. Michael Jordan

  19. Satire • Mockery, ridicule, parody

  20. Theme • Message or point of a story

  21. Dialogue • Conversation between two characters

  22. Narrative • Anything that tells a story real or imaginary

  23. Foil • A sharp contrast between characters

  24. Allusion • Reference to a person, place or thing outside of the story that the audience should know. Cupid

  25. Antagonist • Person or thing working against the hero

  26. Protagonist • The main character or hero of the story

  27. Oxymoron • A combination of contradictory terms

  28. Pathos • Part of the story that elicits sorrow or pity

  29. Antithesis • Using opposing ideas in the same thought for emphasis It was the best of times It was the worst of times

  30. Style • The way an author uses words to form his ideas

  31. Aside • Conversation on stage between characters not heard by others on stage.

  32. Soliloquy • Character making a speech alone on stage

  33. Omniscient • Unlimited knowledge - all knowing

  34. Epithet • word or phrase used in place of someone’s name – Air Jordan Mr. Know-it-All Material Girl

  35. Omnipotent • Unlimited power - All powerful

  36. Epiphany • A sudden realization of something
