Mumbai NEWS An Entrepreneurial Success Story • A dabbawalla, is a person in the Indian city of Mumbai whose job is to carry and deliver freshly made food from home in lunch boxes to their offices. • The Forbes story details the efficiency with which they deliver the tiffins of their customers. Around 5000 Dabbawalas deliver 175,000 lunches everyday and take the empty Tiffin back. They make one mistake in 2 months. This means there is one error on every 16 million transactions. This is thus a six sigma performance (a term used in quality assurance if the percentage of correctness is 99.999999) . • Despite terror activities loom large over Mumbai, its famed dabbawalas , who earned praise from Britain's Prince Charles and billionaire Richard Branson of Virgin Atlantic for their business management techniques, go about their work unhindered and unperturbed by the frenzy of security checking's at railway stations that has now become a part of an average Mumbaikar's life. • What makes it unique is its low capital intensity and its price performance relationship.
