  1. Notes: Non-Renewable and Renewable Resources pg 88 Non-Renewable Resources

  2. Coal What is it? • A hard, black rock made from fossilized plants Advantages: • Cheap • Easy to transport Disadvantages: • # 1 polluter** • Mining destroys habitats Note: • #1 source of electricity in USA. **

  3. Crude Oil What is it? • A thick, sticky, smelly, black liquid that forms from fossilized sea animals Advantages: • Easy to transport Disadvantages: • #2 polluter • Oil spills destroy habitats • Limited amount left Note: • Thousands of products are made from it**

  4. Natural Gas What is it? • Colorless, odorless, gas that forms above crude oil underground Advantages: • Generates a lot of energy Disadvantages: • Extremely flammable • Limited amount left Notes: • Hydraulic fracturing or “Fracking” is the process of forcing fluid underground and cracking rock to release gas

  5. Nuclear Energy What is it? • Uranium is an element dug up from the ground Advantages: • Cheaper than renewables • No CO2 pollution Disadvantages: • Deadly radiation if it melts down • Nowhere to store old, radioactive uranium Notes: • #2 source of electricity in USA**

  6. Notes: Non-Renewable and Renewable Resources Renewable Resources

  7. Hydro-Electric Power What is it? • Dam a river to form a lake and use falling water to make electricity Advantages: • Does not pollute • Cheap Disadvantages: • Many rivers already dammed. • Destroys habitat. Notes: • **#4 source of electricity in USA over-all • **#1 for renewables

  8. Solar Power What is it? • The sun’s energy (radiant energy) Advantages: • Does not pollute • **Will not run out for billions of years Disadvantages: • Only works when sun is shining • Expensive

  9. Wind Power What is it? • Blowing wind Advantages: • Cheap • does not pollute Disadvantages: • only works where wind blows a lot • windmills noisy

  10. Biomass Fuels What is it? • Burning “biotic” stuff (usually garbage) Advantages: • Cheap • Renewable – we always have garbage! Disadvantages: • pollutes (CO2, toxics) • methane hard to transport

  11. Geothermal Power What is it? • Earth’s heat (magma deep underground) Advantages: • does not pollute Disadvantages: • very few places where magma rises close enough to surface.
