  2. The Third Grade World What is a 3rd grader?

  3. A Little About Me • I’ve been teaching at Lunada Bay for 17 years. • Before that, I taught for LAUSD in downtown • Los Angeles for 13 years. • I have taught kindergarten through 3rd grade • in both English and Spanish. • I have a BA in Psychology from UCSC.

What is Reading Workshop • Reading Workshop emphasizes the importance of student engagement and the interaction between readers and text. • It provides differentiated instruction in reading that explicitly teaches students strategies to become more skillful at comprehending text. • It involves students in authentic reading experiences that foster independence and the love of reading.

Mathematics Grade 3 -Overview • Third grade students develop an understanding of multiplication and division and learn to fluently multiply and divide within 100. • Students are expected to know from memory all products of two one digit numbers by the end of third grade. • Place value understanding is used for multi-digit computation and estimation. • Fractions are introduced in the third grade with an emphasis on understanding fractions as numbers and their relative size and placement on the number line. • In third grade students understand concepts of area and perimeter and solve problems using liquid volume and mass.

  10. Writing Workshop During the writing workshop, students are invited to live, work and learn as writers. They learn to observe their lives and the world around them while collecting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing well-crafted narrative and expository texts. Writing Workshop creates an environment where students can acquire skills, along with fluency and confidence. Students are put in charge of choosing the topics that they write about and are actively involved with creating their own texts.

Social Studies Continuity and Change -Grade 3  Students explore physical geography and use maps, tables, graphs, photographs, and charts to organize information about people, places, and environments in a spatial context.  Students describe the American Indian nations in their local region long ago and in the recent past.  Students draw from historical and community resources to organize the sequence of local historical events and describe how each period of settlement left its mark on the land.  Students understand the role of rules and laws in our daily lives and the basic structure of the U.S. government.  Students demonstrate basic economic reasoning skills and an understanding of the economy of the local region.

  17. Expectations: I expect all students: • To be considerate and kind to everyone. • To be respectful and polite to all faculty, staff, adults and also their classmates. • To work their hardest every day to achieve their own personal best.

  19. Consequences - Warnings-at least 2 verbal warnings • SLOW DOWN-Time Out (count to 100 by the gate during recess or lunch) • STOP- Think Time (write a reflection on your behavior and how to improve it)

  20. Dress Code • The school dress code applies at all times. Nothing your child wears should be distracting to themselves or others. • We run or have PE almost every day so they need to wear shoes they can run/dance in.

  22. Report Cards • We had a new record card last year. • Conferences will be in the fall with an option one in the spring. But anytime you’d like to talk to me about your child please just email me and we can set up an appointment.

  23. Homework • Should be done in a relatively quiet, distraction free place. • How much should a parent help out? • What you should do if your child has worked really hard, but still doesn’t get it?

  24. More About Homework • Daily, weekly writing, and projects • Book report/projects- 4 per year • Moving toward middle school • Daily assignments -planner for 3rd grader • Edlio

  25. Edlio • We have a new "edline" called Edlio. • I will post homework weekly on Edlio. I try to get homework posted during the weekend, however sometimes it might not be posted until Monday. • Lots of important information will be coming through Edlio. So please check it weekly. • Remember that you don’t have to log on to Edlio, just go to: lunadabay.pvpusd.net

  26. Aeries.net Portal • Aeries is where you input your contact information for your child so the school knows how to reach you. • I will email you from this portal so please make sure your email address is kept up to date.

  27. Volunteers • Work with small groups • Read with individual students • Do administrative tasks-(making copies, etc.) • Help with special projects

  28. Birthdays Please email me at least a day before your child’s birthday if you wish to bring treats to school. Also please make it something easy to distribute. We celebrate birthdays at 2:15, M-TH and at 1:15 on Mondays.
