  2. Condone (verb) • To forgive or overlook an offense • I can not condone your racism; I think you need to read up on your history.

  3. Nuance -noun or adj • A slight or subtle degree of difference • There is a nuance between your tone and your actions. • The painting had nuanced hues of blue and brown.

  4. cacophony • Harsh-sounding or having discordance • The cacophony coming from the band room kept us from being able to concentrate. • The cacophony of colors made it hard to understand the picture.

  5. Enigma (noun) • A mystery; something seemingly inexplicable • It is an enigma why Charlie Sheen is so appealing to people; even with his recent behavior against women, he seems popular. • She was an enigma to him; • he could never tell • what she was thinking.

  6. Apathy- (verb) • lack of interest or concern; a state of not caring • Many students profess apathy toward reading, but perhaps it is because they haven’t found the right books.

  7. officious • Excessively eager to deliver unsolicited or unwanted help • My mother-in-law is not the officious type, thank goodness; she never steps in and criticizes the way I am raising her grandchildren.

  8. Amicable--adj • Being friendly or outgoing • I prefer to hang around amicable people than moody ones, even though moody people sometimes have interesting perspectives on life.

  9. Elicit—(verb) • To draw or bring out; to evoke • She elicited sympathy for herself when she began crying in class.

  10. Flagrant--adj • Flaunting; blatant; without shame • Fred Phelps is a flagrant racist who leads a group of misguided people in unlawful, disgusting displays at military funerals.

  11. Macabre--noun • Eerie; deathly or morbid • Stephen King has an obsession with the macabre as demonstrated in his writings.
