  4. There are many varieties of one of the most familiar insects in the world, the bee. I have focused my research on the honey bee, also known as Apis Mellifera. Physical Characteristics: A bee’s body is made up of three parts • Head • Contains eyes, antennae & feeding structures • Like many insects, bees have compound eyes • The antennae of a bee is for smelling • Thorax • Contains wings, legs & muscles involving movement • Abdomen • Contains reproductive organs and stinger (while the basic anatomy of a honey bee is the same, there are some biological variations that depend on the caste of each particular bee) Honey bees have a bright color pattern in order to warn potential predators. What they are warning predators of is their stinger located at the end of the abdomen. However, only female bees can actually sting. http://www.gpnc.org/honeybee.htm

  5. Honey Bees are very social insects. They create nests called hives that contain up to 20,000 bees. Within these hives is where the bees work and live in a very structured social order. Their social order is made up of three different castes • Queen • The queen’s purpose is to produce more bees, with the ability of laying 1,500 eggs per day. She is predicted to live 2-8 years and is larger in size. She can use her stinger multiple times • Drone • The drone’s purpose is to mate with a new queen. They only live about 8 weeks and have no stinger, but visibly larger eyes. • Worker • The worker’s purpose is to operate and maintain the hive and they make up the majority of it’s occupants. They are all female and are born with certain adaptations to transport and collect honey. They are able to use their stinger once and when they do, the bee dies.
